There are two sets of criteria :

1. The parameters set by your card issuer in respect of cash withdrawals from Spanish ATM’s including both GBP and EUR accounts

2. Spanish Bank ATM withdrawals charges

For example I sometimes use a GBP Monzo card at ATM’s. From memory they permit 300€ cash per month free and apply as close to spot FX rate as is possible

BUT all Spanish banks will charge for use of their ATMs - except if you are an existing a/c holder and at one of your own bank’s terminals

The very best deals last week were across the road from Maria Zambrano station at Ibercaja Banco

Monzo 0.98 € fee (GBP to EUR)

TransferWise 0.76 € (EUR a/c)

NB Beware the sheer skullduggery of Banco Santander for a non-account holder withdrawals!

Hi, I ran into this issue with TransferWise - they also offer 2 or 3 free withdrawals from 'selected' ATMS, but all the ATMS I have tried, try to charge a (significant) fee. From the N26 website it looks like when you open an account with them, you get an app that shows you the local 'free ATMs'....

... I'll probably just open an account and figure it out! I'm mostly cash-free, but cash can be handy for small/sub-1euro purchases. Thx...

Hi, Yes you can pull up a map of your area and ATM`s are marked. From memory our nearest to where we live is almost next to Snack Attack.

That sounds great - there are bound to be ATMs in the Fuengirola area too. Thanks.

N26 free lunch? Sadly not

They have a plethora of different accounts - and most attract a monthly fee with the exception of ‘Standard’

Also they are geared for resident expats rather than non-resident property owners

They are now onboard with Wise Plc (TransferWise) which deals with their (say) GBP/EUR FX transfers.

It’s a small world.

N26 has four accounts which is far from a "Plethora" .The "standard" free account  carries all that most customers require and is equal to all other  accounts offered by other banks.

N26 offers currency exchange with Wise which can be linked to ones n26 account for convenience. Money exchange through Wise is not compulsory.

Anyone with a spanish address can open an n26 account. Accounts are no longer available in the uk.

Isn’t the point of this Forum to offer very specific advice whenever possible?

Frankly, opining that the Standard Account provides what ‘most’ customers require is only half helpful

Surely there is a need for (say) non-resident house owners to understand the detail?

Specific advise and information concerning both n26 and Wise accounts have already  been offered in a considerable number of previous posts by listing those services that are included in the free "standard" account and exactly what is included in a Wise account. Several additional questions have also been answered in full together with general info.

Perhaps it may assist  you if you were to read the previous posts so that you may be equipped to give any further advice that you deem helpful, thus avoiding you being only "half helpful".

Can you pay direct debits from Wise and N26 accounts?

Hi, You most certainly can with a free standard n26 account. So far as Wise is concerned I have only used them to exchange currency so I cant comment upon your question.

Hi, Apologies for delay in getting back to you.

I must admit to being confused regarding "free" withdrawals from ATM`s. N26 will not charge a customer for the first three ATM withdrawals per month. My understanding was that there are certain ATM machines where one can withdraw money without being charged a fee by the ATM owner.

I wrote to N26 [ europe ] yesterday for clarification. A reply today confirms three free withdrawals per month without a fee being charged by n26 BUT there is a fee charged by the ATM owner.

My Wife and I have visited two ATM`s in La cala and entered my n26 debit card. Each one will charge for a withdrawal. We went to Sabadell and Caixa banks  cash machines and both charge a fee for withdrawal but considerably cheaper than the isolated ATM`s. I keyed in €40.00 and Caixa quoted €1.60 and Sabadell €1.40. for withdrawals. I withdrew €40.00 from Sabadell and received exactly €40.00 without any reduction. No deduction has been made by Sabadell nor by n26.

Therefore it seems best to use a banks cash machine for withdrawals which appear very cheap. There does not seem to be any specific free ATM`s for the use of n26 clients.

I stand to be corrected.
