Hi, Apologies for delay in getting back to you.

I must admit to being confused regarding "free" withdrawals from ATM`s. N26 will not charge a customer for the first three ATM withdrawals per month. My understanding was that there are certain ATM machines where one can withdraw money without being charged a fee by the ATM owner....

...

I wrote to N26 [ europe ] yesterday for clarification. A reply today confirms three free withdrawals per month without a fee being charged by n26 BUT there is a fee charged by the ATM owner.

My Wife and I have visited two ATM`s in La cala and entered my n26 debit card. Each one will charge for a withdrawal. We went to Sabadell and Caixa banks  cash machines and both charge a fee for withdrawal but considerably cheaper than the isolated ATM`s. I keyed in €40.00 and Caixa quoted €1.60 and Sabadell €1.40. for withdrawals. I withdrew €40.00 from Sabadell and received exactly €40.00 without any reduction. No deduction has been made by Sabadell nor by n26.

Therefore it seems best to use a banks cash machine for withdrawals which appear very cheap. There does not seem to be any specific free ATM`s for the use of n26 clients.

I stand to be corrected.

The fee charged by the ATM owning bank may be a fixed fee no matter how much you take out.

That was the case for a local ATM near me.

Easy to test as you should be able to cancel the transaction once they display what your fee will be.

As it was a fixed fee for me, instead of withdrawing 40 euro I withdrew 200.

Hi, yes it was a fixed fee as we cancelled Caixa withdrawal and then went to Sabadel. The fixed fee showed up on the transaction but have no idea how the fee is taken.

Thanks for your detailed response, which is very useful and much appreciated. So it seems the withdrawals are ‘free but not free’! It’s rather misleading for them to say Free withdrawals without clarifying the situation - but that seems to be ’acceptable’ in the business world today! I think Marketing departments  should be renamed ‘Misleading departments’ because their job is to make things look better than they are! :) Anyway, a fixed fee of around 1.50 euros for a 200 euro withdrawal seems not unreasonable. I imagine the fee will show up in your N26 bank account as a ‘Free withdrawal fee’!! :) Thanks for clarifying things!

I opened a starling bank Serling account in Uk and once that was set up you can get a euro account that runs in line with it and I pay all my Spanish bills through this now with no charges

Hi, Might I suggest you take a look at the TrustPilot reviews of Starling.
