Hi, any UK residents on here opened an Spanish N26 account, if so how did you overcome the first page of the application which if you state you're a UK resident the N26 not available?

I have searched on here & plenty of posts stating all you need is a spanish address & NIE (I have both) but that doesn't get me past the resident question. (I am reluctant to state that I am resident in spain when I am not)

Am sure I saw a post from UK resident saying they contacted N26 who allowed them to open an account with Spanish address but cannot find the post.

I did send an email to N26 helpline but their reply just confirmed what the website says, i.e. not available to UK residents.

Hoping UK residents with N26 account will see this & reply

Regards

Andrew

The answer simple, you cannot state you are a UK resident, the problem being UK no longer in the EEA/EU - Single Market that covers trade in financial services and N26 headquartered in Germany, they shut down the UK operation. However, if you have an NIE and Spanish address you should be fine. You could try Wise - https://wise.com/gb/blog/introducing-gbp-and-eur-direct-debits

Thanks David, I'll have a look at Wise.

re N26, I suppose what I really want to know is how any UK residents managed to get past the 1st question regarding residency

As you say (& I already knew) you can't say you're Spanish resident if you are not but that's the stumbling block in trying to open an account via their website.

I don't think they did go past it, apart from a while back when N26 was in the UK.

I've set up a Wise account.

Added my Wise vitual debit card to my Google Wallet.

Paid £5 to get my optional debit card.

Just transferring some euros from my Sabadell account to my Wise account.

Then I'll start transferring my DDs from Sabadell to Wise.

Once all my DDs are working I'll close my Sabadell account.

Thanks for the update Jeffers. I too have signed up to Wise, & will have a card waiting when I return to UK. Not done anymore than that yet, think I’ll set up a test DD, see how that goes & transfer everything after that

Doing a test DD that won't cause me a lot of pain if it doesn't work is what I am planning to do as well.

I need to get some euros in my Wise account before changing the DD to take the euros from my Wise account.

Hit my first problem using Wise.

I ask the administrator of my urbanisation to stop doing a DD against my Sabadell bank account and take the DD from my Wise bank account, supplying my Wise IBAN which is a Belgium bank.

This was my administrator's reply:-

"Good morning, the direct debit account number must be an account number from a Spanish bank, we cannot remittances to an account outside of Spain.

Kind regards"

I hope the other Spanish organisations that DD my Sabadell bank account don't tell me the same.

I have DDs for:-

  1. Urbanisation fees, administrator
  2. Broadband
  3. Water
  4. Electric
  5. Local council taxes, get 5% discount when paying by DD
Anyone else have this issue with DDs having to be from a Spanish bank account?
How did you overcome the issue?

WOW, this is just terrible.  I could see the Govt of Spain but your administrator?  That to me is pure and utter 'crap' because Wise is an EU bank.

I have just set up both Revolut and N26 and was planning on testing the DD system which is where I expected things to break down myself.

I know that N26 has a Madrid office but not sure if this would classify it as a "Spanish Bank" so I might run into the same problem.  Everywhere 'tightening the noose' on the average citizen.

I believe N26 have a Spanish IBAN, which the authorities require to accept payments thru.

Main issue for me, that it’s not open to UK residents. Residency is the first question on the online application, & when you state UK & you cannot proceed further
