Has anyone used this company from Malaga airport? We would like to hire a car for five days at the beginning of October to visit Competa and surrounding areas.

Is this a trustworthy company or does anyone have any other suggestions?

I don’t know this company but a word of advice -  avoid gold car-they are renowned for ripping off and excess charge even though offering initial ridiculously low hire prices-there is a website dedicated to people who have been ripped off by this company not just in Malaga that in many other places!

I agree, we will never use them again. Extra charges were added, all in Spanish, and nothing was said as we collected the car. We thought we were paying the deposit! They rip people off!

I've used this group twice when coming over on visits. Like all car hire companies they will try and get you from every angle, but if you take care and follow due diligence you are ok. You need to ensure your base rate is fair, then find out what the local charges are (usually 30 to 40 euros ..ish). Then there is insurance, this is where you dance with the devil & decide if you are lucky... Well are you? Going with the very basic insurance you are covered third party, but any dings, dongs, scrapes or scratches will cost. You have to go over the car with a fine tooth comb when you pick it up! Take pictures of everything and have someone's finger pointing to the damage in the photo. Make a folder on your phone (if that's you camera) and make sure the time and date are in place. Take pics inside too, also the boot, and under the bonnet.

When you take the car back to OK, you drive to another section of the facility to the pick up, they check your car and then release you after you sign their electronic contract. Make sure you have everything cleared, don't just sign until you have checked they haven't found anything untoward. If they have, then pull out your pictures and argue like Perry Mason.

I usually take out their full insurance, yes it's a rip off and yes it's usually not needed... But honestly, for the peace of mind I think it's worth it!

One last thing, when you get the car parked at your first point if call, take off the stickers they put on the car, they are stickers for a reason. Remove carefully and store in the glove box. Thieves like to target hire cars, they know the police won't go too hard chasing, and the chance of booty in the booty is quite high!

Enjoy your vacation... Spanish driving is... 'Interesting'!!! 🤓

I've worked with a number of companies out of Malaga, and I've found OK to be the best overall--excellent service, streamlined check-in, etc., though you do have to take a shuttle offsite to get to their rental yard, which is true of many of them. The one I would recommend avoiding is Nizacar. BTW you might try Doyouspain.com or autoeurope.com first, they work with a number of companies and get you the best rates.

Word of warning with Doitspain - they will point you toward Goldcar as the cheapest- this is the company that 99% of people who have hired with them will tell you AVOID!

Good advice from the earlier message to take loads of pictures identifying damage already there so you can’t be caught with it!

FWIW I have used Doyouspain half a dozen times, and I've never been steered to Goldcar.

We use Centauro the last 4 times we visited CdS & have been happy with them.

Regarding damage they don't worry about small knocks, on the vehicle inspection record there is a small circle (approx 4cm across) any damage within the circle is discounted both on pick up & drop off.

Last time we got damage (a supermarket trolley bash) which was borderline/larger than the 4cm circle & I thought they'd charge for it - they did not & yes they did see it.

We buy an annual car hire excess policy & take the "high excess insurance" option from Centauro. Ours is with a reputable insurer - Zurich via https://www.icarhireinsurance.com/

Hi All

Car hire, you can't expect to hire a car for 2/3 euro a day with no catches.

We have found Helle holis, and del paso very good but take the all inclusive package with the insurance.

You can purchase a policy for insurance before you go, but any problems and you have to pay and sort out your claim when you get back to retrieve your money.

Also a large deposit will be taken off your credit card at time of hire, which the card company will charge you for for the service. 😎
