Considering Velez Malaga to purchase a property and live there part time. So do have a number of questions. Is it safe? Are there Brits in Velez Malaga? Or is it mainly Spanish? Looking forward to answers and thank you very much.

Hi, I would rent there before you buy.

Regards,

Hi EM10 - agree with Chris that it's best to rent in the target area. Velez-Malaga has different locations - beach, village, large towns. We want to buy there and will rent for six months so we can decide.

We tried searching for properties on 1-2 week trips from UK but found it impossible to reach owners and forming an impression of the area and facilities.

Thank you Chris, that is sound advice and I should take it before making a mistake. We are currently selling a property which I would not have bought had I known I would not like the area or the people in it. There is a lot to consider when you cannot purchase in the well known expensive areas yet even then everything has been changing so fast in the last years better safe than sorry. Wish you all the best in your pursuit and having lived in several countries before you reminded me that places you once liked can become less appealing as you get older or as the world situation continues to change. Have a lovely day.

To answer the question about safety, I find the area very safe. As for advice it all depends on what you are looking for where you want to live. Give us a bit more info in what you would like or why you don’t like where you are now apart from the people there and I personally can give you my advice then. Sorry if not much help.

...vice then. Sorry if not much help.

Currently have a flat in ~Denia on the market and it is getting offers which the estate agent considers are too low. So am using the time I have been granted to research. I do agree that one should rent before buying however at our age both my husband and myself are a bit too weary of the side effects of travelling. Our budget would make Velez Malaga affordable which is why I am asking. Am looking in town centre where all the amenities are easy walking distance. We like to go out for a meal as often as we can yet in Denia prices have risen to such heights that it is impossible so I cook. Not that I hate cooking, far from it, yet going out is nice and we have not really made friends in Denia apart from one Brit who is not a close friend yet friendly. What is it I do not like about our current flat location? I once went to ask for a prescription and was charged 200.. The locals in Denia seem to dislike foreigners and speak valencian when you appear which I find rude. The only person I really like is my hairdresser, she is wonderful. Also have a good one in Devon which is where we always come back to. To sum it up it is a place to spend British winters we are looking for as neither the heat nor extreme cold nor horrid energy bills are for us so finding alternatives makes sense. Time is now not later, at least that is what I believe. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong or have been misled. That much said the estate agent who sold us the flat to begin with conned us and so did some workers who renovated. Have never got over the sense of loss and disappointment so no brooding is allowed and moving on is on the cards.

Well going by what you say I think the place would be perfect for you. The only thing is do you want to be by the beach or close by? Vélez as you know has no beach Torre del mar does. I can only agree with you about Valencia, as nice as the area is the people are not as nice as this area, as for the language well, that’s why we didn’t go that way as we were aware of maybe being a problem, same as Cataluña would not go there to even visit. Price wise, Vélez is cheaper so you would get more property for your money, still Torre has some flats that would be adécuate (depends on budget). You have the beach in Torre so can stay winter and summer and kill two birds with one stone. Even though everything has gone up in prices (food wise) everywhere, there are menus at €8 euros and bars and places are cheap compared to many places. let me know if you need to know a bit more or have other questions.

The beach is not important any longer whereas amenities within flat walking distance is definitely a must. If people are nice then we would like it. Am waiting for the estate agent to sell and as soon as I can am moving to a friendlier and cheaper place.Thank you so much for your support, if you know the area you might be able to tell me what areas in Velez Malaga are flat, that would save me a lot of time. Wish you all the best.
