No medical cover, no visa. Spain has the upper hand and asks that you comply with all the rules.

I might add medical cover can sometimes be tricky, in particular with private insurance of the elderly or those people with 'pre-existing conditions' which most insurers will not cover. (Note often thinks like cancer not included) 'EHIC cover ceases once a resident' and pensioners since Brexit cannot get what was called an S1, where the NHS gave cover. One good thing is private GP's cheap compared to the UK. about 60 Euro an appointment, many drugs expensive compared to the UK & the pharmacies have a monopoly as supermarkets cannot sell basic drugs like aspirin.

Hi Mel,

When we went to embassy we were told the medical insurance had to be showing in place for twelve months BUPA sanitas provided us with a letter… we were told it had to be enforce three months prior to us go to mijas which 1st November arrival

If what we were told is correct your insurance needs to be active from early October…

We have a 5 month rental in mijas till March… if we like it we will extend and stay on.. unfortunately the rentals become expensive may onwards as they rental attracts premium money…. We are looking to buy a place but probably not till October 2022

if have any questions let me know… the visa process was tricky with one form in Spanish needing completion…but it’s doable. They will take your passports at embassy while the process visa .. Manchester visa consulate completed ours in 3 weeks….

Both your ACRO form and medical check form from doctor need to be translated by verified translator approved by uk SPANISH embassy and the ACRO CRIMINAL check form.. they then need apostlation at an FCO UK ..

My missus has some tel numbers for rental options jan/feb should be cheap enough before spring season

Clive

Hi Everyone,

Has any UK citizens applied for a Non Lucrative Visa for Spain and been successful?

My questions are around the medical healthcare cover and my address in Spain.  We are hoping to move in January 2022 and we have been given a list of documents that we need to take to our appointment at the Spanish Embassy however we won't have medical cover until we arrive and we know that we have been successful in the visa application.  The same for our address.  Once we know that we have been successful then we will look for somewhere to rent.  I am trying to avoid paying for medical insurance and rent when we are still in the UK and if we don't know that our application has been successful.

Thanks for the help

Mel

Hi Mel,

This is sure a tricky situation!  I hope you can get past everything.

I just wanted to say that if you have all your ducks lined up in terms of the requirements then you will most likely be approved.  Just make sure you have everything in place that is required - such as enough income, fully comp insurance, etc.

You should make it through the hoops with no problem if you follow the rules the Govt has laid out.  Good luck!

Hi,

There is no actual guide unfortunately but having been through the process glad to help you avoid the pitfalls..

If you are going to go for 6 months it will prove a costly process as you need to have full medical cover in place for three months before departure… looking at your banner you are same age as me so for two people with no underlying health issues it’s £150 a month for two.. the visas snd translation costs for health form snd ACRO for two people is about 1400…

You might be better looking at Portugal which is still 180 days in 180 days out… happy to help with any questions you may have

I agree obtaining a Non Lucrative Visa to Spain for only a 6 month period is not really viable.

I note you suggest 'Portugal', however, they are also part of the 'Schengen Area'. The 90/180 day rule is not ‘enshrined’ in EU law but a regulation passed by members of the Schengen & the rules adopted collectively as law by their own parliaments. (Countries not in the Schengen Area agreement do not apply this rule but may have other requirements)

Hi Guys ,

Thank you for the tips and help .

The cost of the insurance is not putting us off ,as we would be under uk 'retirement age ' if this is a issue  for some insurance providers ?

I read that a visit, in person, to a UK Spanish Embassy is also necessary?
