Hi

I am English and a pensioner and do not drive.  I need bus or train services from Alcaucin to enable me to get from and to the airport and for days out.  I have looked on the internet but cannot find anything, would somebody be able to let me know what is available before I look to buy a townhouse.

Thank you

Celia

Hi there,

Although I can drive, I came to Spain with the decision to not have a car here, for various reasons. I looked for places to live using public transport, and Alcaucin was top of my list on paper. However, trying to get there from Malaga was really difficult, there were very few buses, mostly at weird times, and I think I decided not to live there on the bus to my overnight stay there! It's such a lovely place but, far too inaccessible without a car.

We’re planning on doing the same and are looking at the Velez Malaga area. On paper it sounds perfect but what is public transport really like? Ideally we’d like plenty of service to Malaga and all the better if other areas had a bus service too

Hi there,

It depends on where in 'the area' you are thinking of living. V-M itself is very well served with buses, there's a big bus station at Torre del Mar that has routes to pretty much most of Spain - so does Nerja. Some of the larger villages/smaller towns have good, regular buses and not having a car isn't a problem. The answer is to try it for yourself. Take a few weeks to visit places using public transport and see how it works.
Public transport in Spain is very good. But, as in other countries, the more car ownership there is, the less public transport is needed, and low use routes will be cut.

Thank you for your informative reply. We are looking at Velez-Malaga itself as well as Torre del Mare and Torrox. We do want to ditch the use of a car and from what you’ve said this would be eminently possible. We are visiting next month hopefully and will return later in the year to see what it’s like out of season. Again many thanks for your response.

I live in Torrox and the bus service is excellent. V-M and TdM have a comprehensive service going to many destinations, plus only 30 mins to the centre of Malaga and access to a fantastic train service. The trouble is, unless you live in the campos, parking in these little streets is a nightmare. If I need a car, I can always hire one.

Good luck with getting out here to visit, I hope it goes well.
