Off peak electric - 1 replies

MikeClery Posted by MikeClery in Utilities: Electric, gas and water recommendations and advice in Mijas Costa on Thu Oct 9, 2025 12:55pm

last year I installed 5KW of solar panel with 20KWH of solar storage. And as you expect I have not used electricity since.

This spring we purchased an electric car and during the summer we have had enough solar energy to supply the house and the card.

Now we are entering the winter months, it is time to re-think our strategy. I have installed a WIFI change over switch so that car can be charged by the utility when the sun does not shine. This would be a good time to look for an off peak electricity deal.

Can anybody suggest where we could find an off-peak supplier?

Thanks Mike Clery

Could anyone recommend a reputable insurance company for house and vehicle insurance that pays out quickly should a claim is made?

How to Renew a Withdrawal Agreement TIE - Bad news for many, 'you start over again'. See Update May 2025 - 2 replies

Holaitsdavid Posted by Holaitsdavid in General Mijas Costa discussion on Wed Jul 9, 2025 5:11am

Under the Withdrawal Agreement, British citizens with a five-year (temporary) TIE card are entitled to switch to the permanent (10-year) version after meeting the residency requirement. However, in Málaga — and some other areas — the Policía Nacional will not process the exchange until your current TIE has actually expired, regardless of your residency status.

Here’s what to expect:

  • You’ll need to complete the EX23 form again, 'just as you did for your initial TIE'

  • You must show proof of:

    • Healthcare

    • Accommodation

    • Income or savings

  • If you didn’t previously hold the green residency card or A4 certificate, you’ll also need a ‘resolución favorable’ - and in places like Málaga, you can’t apply for this until your TIE has expired.

Many Brits may be surprised by how complex the process is. It’s not automatic, and Spanish bureaucracy can be tricky to navigate, even for those who’ve lived here for years. Some may benefit from professional assistance.

FUENGIROLA FESTIVAL June 24th St. John’s Day: La Fiesta de San Juan - Specially organized street party, - 0 replies

Holaitsdavid Posted by Holaitsdavid in General Mijas Costa discussion on Mon Jun 23, 2025 2:20am

June 24th - St. John’s Day: La Fiesta de San Juan
The 24th of June is the day of St. John celebrated in other parts of Andalucia; this is a very special night of the year. The tradition is to build many bonfires, especially on the beach. It is said to be a night of magic. The background to the festivities comes from the first baptism given by St. John. Nowadays, it is a great excuse for night parties, particularly on the beach. The tradition is to be at the waters edge at midnight and to hold hands and walk into the sea backwards, while you make a wish. By 1:00 a.m. at various points along the Fuengirola beach, there are huge gatherings of people in party mood. There are bonfires at certain points along the sand and you will see that groups of people have set up open tents and the smell of barbeques and the many sounds of the fair can go on until very late into the night and early morning.

There is a specially organised Boquetillo neighbourhood (on the right, approximately way up Avenida de Mijas from the town centre) there is specially organized street party, with lively Spanish music and other entertainment and many children’s attractions. The local restaurants and bars in this area offer excellent local dishes and stay open till the small hours of the morning. This small fair normally goes on for several days and nights after San Juan on the 24th. This is an extremely noisy few days and nights for the residents of this very built-up area, so they often join in rather than try to sleep through the bedlam. Joining in with the vibrant Andalucian party atmosphere is a good way to get you into the swing of things, especially since this is considered to be the fiesta that gets summer underway.

Which nationalities have the highest number of residence permits in Malaga? - 0 replies

Holaitsdavid Posted by Holaitsdavid in General Mijas Costa discussion on Tue May 27, 2025 1:46am

Ukrainians come first on a provincial level in Malaga - 29,715 registered residents, or a bit more than 22% of the total, which is close to 134,000 permits.

The British exception

What has vastly changed in the last decade is the number of British nationals with residence permits. In 2014, there were no British with residence permits, because, at the time, the UK was part of the EU, which meant that people could move freely between Britain and Spain. However, things changed since Brexit became official on 31 January 2020 and the UK left the EU and, more importantly, since the new regulations came into force in 2021. At the end of last year, there were 3,654 British nationals with permits in Malaga.
