The invitation letter is only necessary for non-EU people who want to come to visit the country. That is, people without a passport from the European Union.

This is very interesting David, and a perfect example of the Spanish once again shooting themselves in the foot, destroying their already diminishing income from British tourists.

Before Brexit many pensioners would come to Spain for the winter, renting an apartment for very little money for about 6 months (Oct to Mar perhaps) they would then spend their pensions in the coffee shops, etc and be good for the Spanish economy, they were affectionelty known as the "Blue rinse brigade" , these people could not prove an income of 100 euros a day, but would most certainly not be a problem,or possible financial burden  to Spain.

It is the British tourists that spend an awful lot on holiday , not the Germans or Scandinavians who buy from the cheap supermarkets and sit on their balconys each evening for the duration of their holiday, which is why there are very few, jf any, German or Scanavian bars or cafes around.

The Spanish are the best in the world at killing the golden goose that lays the eggs, and if this new rule comes in many people will go to other places with less red tape for a simple holiday.

Crazy but true!!!

I think that's the same rule before EU citizenship was created 1992 Maastricht, it was drawn to my attention by a British visitor I have coming for Easter. I said, "don't worry they are not stopping people right now as far as I know". It's been published UK press, link below, it's clearly the law here. In view of this my guest insisted I get an official innovation. The charge is 75,05€ and can take weeks to receive.  2022. https://www.immigrationspain.es/en/invitation-letter-spain/

In spite of this being published UK press the Spanish have made no statement, I would imagine has discouraged a lot of tourism, I am not going to the Police to order this, but will give my worried guest a copy of my ID and invitation, with my address. However, it's a pain, the crunch is people could be stopped. Here in the Daily Mirror  Spain travel warning for Brits staying with friends as they risk £8,000 fines https://www.mirror.co.uk/travel/europe/spain-travel-warning-brits-staying-32157993

The fact is Spain signs up to everything that comes out of the EU...

Then dutifully ignores it.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Norm.
