Correct!

It seems the hold up with UK over the licence swap is the reluctance of UK to hand over data about the licence holders 'Data Protection', this included the ownership of vehicles in the UK.

Yes that’s illegal you would need to hire a car and drive as a tourist for three months

if you have full TIE / NIE pre brexit residence status definitely illegal

By driving a Spanish car you are highly unlikely to get pulled over but if you have Spanish car insurance and have an accident you are highly likely not be covered as the Spanish insurance will wriggle out of claim…as you have uk licence

The days of coming out to Spain 90 days with no hassle are gone… brexit has sorted that

As you already brought one, providing insured, (it's the car not the person in Spain which is insured) and don't exceed your Schengen stay as a tourist, I'm sure will be OK, check with insurer. .

If a foreigner decides to buy a car in Spain, they must provide the following documents:

  • An official resident document;
  • A title deed in Spain;
  • A rental agreement for an apartment in Spain;
  • NIE;
  • Municipal registration.

The real issue is that Spain wants access to DVLA records of both driving licence records AND vehicles! Guess why? So far this has been refused.

I think it's a 'trade for continued access to DVLA data so they can fine UK drivers in Spain, in return for Brits to swap licence. For what it's worth, my son with a Spanish hire car was fined for speeding this year. The fine was sent to UK, he paid at once, only to find the hire company also deducted the fine from his credit card details.. 'Outrageous' ???

Clive, weren’t you aware that you could have changed your licence  until the end of April? It’s now illegal from 1st May to drive with a U.K. licence. My understanding is that you now need to take Spanish test to get your licence.  Having said that, David is very switched on, so it ...

...could well be that U.K. is still hoping that a deal can be reached in the future. Good luck.

My understanding is that we cannot swap licenses up until April. I came in December with my visa and was told that I must now book a test or wait for an agreement. Is this wrong?

Also, it's not illegal for those who have not yet expended 6 months on their visa. So if you arrived in, say, February, you have until August before its illegal.

Yes that’s correct if you arrived post brexit like me..

your TIE CARD gives you six months to drive legally…..

Technically after 6 months anyone who arrived post brexit is driving illegally on Uk licence…even with residence card and extended visa..
