Indeed N26 opened Spain does all banks can do with payments, at far lower cost and offer a Spanish IBAN to pay all debits and bills, they are very efficient, with the card you can draw cash and pay in stores. (People need to be in Spain with an NIE number and address to open) I use that and Wise,...

... with a Euro account UK, it's perfect to feed N26 and do all low cost money transfers from UK.

The question  "Do you know if a Wise account is recognised as 'proper'  answer of course, (both Wise and N26 have full banking licence and protection)  one gentleman on the forum stated only uses Wise for all, including direct debits, the key having their Belgium IBAN number, you cannot be forced to have a Spanish Bank account, (in most cases best avoided) But the bank must have a Eurozone IBAN.

Funds in a  Wise account are not protected.
Don't you need to be a Spanish resident to open an N26 account?

With Sabadell you can reduce the charges by placing certain services with them. House insurance, car insurance, mortgage etc. Speak with them about options. Sabadell will make a charge to receive Euros from Revolut (UK) as despite all the SEPAR rules they class Euros from them as a foreign bank. They don't charge to receive Euros from Wise.  BBVA do have a free account however you have to have your TIE card, well thats what happened to me after opening online and visiting with my passport, even though I had my receipt from the police for my TIE application. I found them rude and uncooperative.

N26 will set up an account but you need a Spanish address and your NIE.

In all I decided to have a couple of Spanish bank options in case one played up. The Sabadell app is quite extensive once you get your head around it, and they do have what they call an Expat account if you own a place but are not a resident.

3rd June I get the keys to my apartment in Coto Real. What is the best bank for a non resident expat?

Intention is to get NLV next year once I settle sale of my apartment in Scotland, so I will be in town sporadically but I will need to pay IBI and internet/water etc.

And there you have it Maven....lots of options to look at.  We hope the members of this Forum have helped you on your way in Spain.

N26 has a Spanish IBAN number so it will pay all bills in Spain.  Unless you have other services with Sabadell you will still pay 40 euro every 3 months when N26 will do the same for ZERO.

Hi, can you please confirm

what N26 is

Thanks

N26 is a German neo-bank viz. it operates online and via its App and doesn’t have branch offices. You can apply for debit and credit cards. Importantly for Spain and unlike Wise, Monzo and Revolut it offers a Spanish IBAN - which means you can set up direct debits etc in Spain without the risk of the Payee rejecting them

It closed its London office after Brexit

I have a Wise account and pay all my Spanish DDs with it.
Council, Broadband, Water, Electricity and Urbanisation fees.
My Wise account has a Brussels IBAN
I'm not saying Wise is best, depends what you wish to do with the account, but I didn't want someone making a decision based on incorrect information.

The point was / is that the Spanish banking system is inefficient and SOME payees will only process payments which originate from a Spanish IBAN

Therefore there is risk

Any bank in an EU member country that did that would be breaking EU law.
