I was told it was not possible.  It is.  I’ve been here since Aug last year and I still don’t have an appointment for the NIE interview.  Last week I went into Banco Santander to ask some questions.  Next thing I know I was told that if I was tax resident overseas somewhere, I could get an account with BS.  I had to show my passport, foreign tax return for 2019 and my rental agreement.  Went in the next day and the account was opened. The address on the account is my foreign address, but I don’t care about that (I have no idea why they needed my local rental contract).  I needed a local account to apply for reasonably priced health insurance, so now I’m set.  If you go to BS in Sabinillas, see Sr. Moreno.  I would think that this would work with any other bank also.

Hi Ian

That was good of you to post this information for others. It does not surprise me at all that you were successful!

The Banks would definitely want people to put money in their institutions!!.  They will not put barriers in the way if at all possible.

I wonder if it was someone on this Forum who told you that or something you read on the Internet?

Its definitely true that people will say all sorts of things without knowing the facts.  Always good to check with the source.

Thanks again,

Kerri

I’m 70 and received quotes of 64-140 Euros per month for different levels of coverage from DKV.  This came through Abbeygate Ins at https://www.abbeygatesecure.com/corporate/online/quoteforms/health/health?country=spain  Bupa and Aetna quoted me 1400-1600 per month.  I saw an MD in Sabinillas for a minor issue and DKV was on his list of recommended insurers.

It was unanimous when I talked to friends who've been here a while that an NIE was required to open an account.

Cheers thanks for replying so promptly.  I got my wife insurance through Sabadell bank €140 per month. Covers everything including dental. See is 64.

When I was opening the checking account BS also volunteered that they sold health ins.  But their cutoff age was 65.  Maybe see what happens to the Mrs's insurance when she turns 65.
