Hi Eli
We bought our first house in Competa campo in 1985 and in 1995 bought a village house in Canillas de Albaida. So, over the years we have seen many changes in the development of both villages and the tourist traffic. Over the years there has been many extranjeros coming and going. Some have been very interesting people with a yearning to get involved with the locals and culture! But some not and can be quite embarrassing! So before you commit yourselves to investing I would advise that you rent beforehand to make sure you like the people and the village and it’s facilities and the tedious drive to the coast. Whilst at first it can be a novelty, having to do it several times a week in very hot weather/bad weather-heavy rains, which in the past have caused the roads to collapse and resulting in being cut-off for a few days until repaired! Another important consideration are the steep inclines. If you are fit and healthy not a problem but remember getting older brings creaky knees/hips. Having to carry shopping bags even from your car to the house can be problematic, unless you can park outside your property. And not to forget village properties usually have lots of stairs! I could continue stating lots of things to think about but as I said before rent first. You may also guess that we do not live up in the mountains anymore. As beautiful as they are with fantastic views down to the coast, it can get very cold, damp and wet in winter months and can be as depressing as in the U.K. our friends who still live there suffer in the winter as the houses are not built for the cold nor are they centrally heated or carpeted. We now have a property on the costa in La Herradura (1km from the village) which we think is the most perfect place! Mainly flat once you get to the beach front. Fantastic sea views. Great planting-trees/flowers. Close to Almunecar for shopping, medical care.Close to motorway for Malaga/Granada. More frequent bus routes along the coast. Great mix of Spanish/foreigners. Great bars/restaurants....
