Hire car and parking in old town

New to town, if we rent a vehicle near the new bus station in Estepona we would be arriving about 5:30 p.m. on a Thursday in January. We know how to contact the rental people. We are staying in the old town...a parking lot is indicated on the map maybe four blocks away. This appears to be a paid lot. if people have used this, can they advise us if cars in these lots seem safe overnight, and how the payment system works. Thanks!

Good morning there!

Not quite sure which car park you are referring to. If you tell me where you will be staying in Town I might be able to guess a bit more!

If it's the one underneath the Plaza Antonia Guerrero, that's very cheap, 1 or 2 euros a day I think. Pay machines. But careful - the "Temporary summer closure" of the Calle Terraza to all vehicles except early morning deliveries means that it can be tricky to get there through the one-way back streets.

The open-air one in the Avenida San Lorenzo is also about the same price. You pay (it is supposed to be voluntary, you wouldn't not pay, would you?) the handicapped attendants wearing the hi-vis. They have been authorised by the Town Council to collect money there. Their handicap is not always evident (they may be autistic), but it's a nice way for them all to be out and about, meeting people, and getting a bit of money.

The open-air one by the large Carrefour hypermarket (not the shop's own one, the one off the same roundabout) is free.

Two points about all the car parks. They are always very very full. As there is no parking in the Old Town, everyone is looking for somewhere to leave their car.

And secondly, do not leave anything inside. A hire car will be targeted by the EU gangs that roam all the costa, with devices that allow them to read your key fob as you close the car. They then come and open the car to see if you have suitcases. They don't steal the car, don't damage it, and may be working Torremolinos or Fuengirola in the time you are in Estepona, but the police tell us that they roam around checking tourist cars. By the way, try the TripAdvisor Estepona Forum for general queries about the town - much more traffic on there, many more replies and faster than on here.

Have a lovely time!

Thanks for providing such a detailed answer. I think we are opting for one day of rental. I understand there is a rental place by the bus station which is a taxi ride from the old town....is it correct to think we would need a taxi to go into the old town from there? Janice

It's about a 15-20 minute stroll to the bus station from the old town.

Depending where you are in the town of course.

As a lot of it is pedestrianised, and other streets all one way only (they were built for donkeys passing, not cars), you'll find it tricky to get a taxi from there. Theres a taxi rank on the main road by the beach, near where the Calle Santa Ana meets the main road.

I would walk it myself.

Thank you we will have med size suitcases when walking towards the old town is there a sidewalk or paved shoulder safe to walk on? It feels like our arrival is getting complicated...I am still not sure for example about the bus from Cadiz which I intended to catch in Cadiz. I really wanted to take this route via Cadiz from Seville so we would see something of the coast. Does anyone who reads this know if there is actually a coach from Cadiz to Estepona at about two thirty p.m. as optionally We could take the bus through the mountains. I found the Cadiz to Estepona route once online, and since then never again....thanks for answering my questions as best you can....

Yes, it's good walking.

Hang on while I look at the timetable..

7.00 and 14.00 are the two buses I find. 3h30, they go round the houses! Fare just over €20

Best wishes

You are an angel.. Do you mean you think there is a coach that leaves Cadiz and comes to Estepona leaving Cadiz at two p.m. for Estepona?

is there a nice place to walk to in old town and go for dinner and drinks in Estepona old town in January. Gracias! Janice

Yes, leaves at 2pm.  you will need to get to the bus station in good time to buy your ticket, there may be a queue. In fact, if I were you I would buy my ticket the day before.

Here are places to eat:
