We took a dog in three weeks ago.  It was a mess.  I'm not sure if it had been chained up.  It had a really bad skin infection and gashes/skin infection to his right cheek.  He jumped up at me gently whilst I was at the post box.  I tried to keep him out but he was yelping after me when I tried to turn my back on him.  Apparently neighbours had heard him barking a few days before.  One phoned the local police to be told there's nothing we can do.  I took him to a vet.  He was put on antibiotics and a steroid.  He wasn't chipped.  The vet asked if I wanted to keep him and I said"yes."  He is to be tested for Leishmania disease (a blood test) and I asked if he could be chipped to which she agreed as his sores were improving.  This dog turned out to be a puppy of about 10 months old.  He was skeletal.

My question is, am I allowed legally to keep this dog?  I am reluctant to advertise because of the emaciated state of this dog.  What if someone approaches me claiming he is the owner?

Any help or comments appreciated.  Thank you.

Elle you wonderful person! 😊it is  the law here that all dogs must be microchipped.  So the dog was ownerless.  Now the vet has microchipped him you are his legal owner.  The vet will give you documents to show he is registered to you. If someone approaches you claiming to be the owner just ignore him/her. And if anyone questions the dog’s sorry state just say he was abandoned - abandonada in Spanish.  We found our little dog in the campo when viewing a house.  The agent explained that the previous owner had moved and left him behind 😢 we took the dog to the vet and he wasn’t microchipped.  The vet explained that if we had him chipped we became the legal owners.  That was nearly 4 years ago and we wouldn’t be without him!

Oh I'm so relieved!  He won't be chipped until Wednesday, along with his blood test.  Your dog is so cute!  I will try and post a picture.  Today my husband and I had an iced lolly.  I gave Bryn one.  Fatal, he ate it all, including the lolly wooden stick in one swallow.  When I Googled it I have to check his parcels for 24 to 48 hours.  I read if you give them white bread it somehow wraps around the stick to make it easier to expel.  So now, I'm worrying!

I’m so pleased for you Elle, and what a wonderful thing to do. There are so many abandoned dogs here and the rescue centres are overflowing. What a handsome boy Bryn is, and I’m sure he’ll have the best life with you. I just hope he passes that stick, but I’m sure it’s only the first of many times you’ll worry lol. Oh the joys of having a fur baby - I wouldn’t change it for the world. Good luck with everything.

Another kind message!  So good of you to take the trouble to write!  We're off to the vet today.  He's to have his chip and blood test for Leishmania.  I'll mention the lollipop stick to her.  He's eating and passing parcels as usual but having to squish it takes it to a new level, ewww!

He looks like a hunter's dog.  So wonderful what you are doing for him.  Bless you.

I've got a dog app.  It's 97% Viszla (pronounced Veeshlah!).  And, thank you Kerri.  Bless you.  I know you are an animal lover like me!

Well done for giving a safe home to this poor dog. Unfortunately there are many abandoned animals along the way who without a chip are unwanted and therefore totally yours to keep.

Fortunately dogs have a way of i owi g when someone has a good heart and you are obviously that good soul.

What a blessing he/ she found you!

Over my 21 years here Ive rehomed several homeless and cruelly treated dogs.

They became the most faithful and loving friend you Will ever have.

I also have Friends whose Rescue pets have leishmania. Theres an inexpensive tablet they can take. They are Now living a wonderful Life and all of ours are enhanced by having their adorable company!

Enjoy your little friend and congratulations on your beautiful beating heart!
