..But not a bank account?

Having a NIE makes it easy to buy stuff. I don't know what the limit is after which you need one, but we were asked when setting up bank account & when buying oven, dishwasher etc Maybe you can provide other identification for such goods if you don't have one.

I understand that you have to have a NIE if you wish to buy property, or are resident - and there are rules about how long you can stay before you have to register as resident 

I agree, from what I have been told, that the NIE is a key document for most transactions for any resident or person entering into any commercial contract, but NOT opening a bank account. 

The banks, like all other suppliers who contract need to comply with knc (‘know your customer’) anti money laundering requirements. they accept UK National Insurance numbers and documents I mentioned in my earlier post. The bank account opening form I completed showed ‘NIE/NI’.

if you are buying a property your Lawyer will organise your NIE.

Hi, we just about to complete on our property in Archidona which is nearby. Like others have said we signed a POA and our Spanish lawyer has done everything including obtaining NIE numbers and opening up a bank account for us. 

Who was your solicitor?

A company called ‘Lawyers in Spain’ they specialise in acting for Brits purchasing. Our lawyer is called Isabel and has been very helpful. I can provide her contact details if you wish

Oh sorry. We found a property, had an offer accepted then contacted the solicitor. Trabuco is a lovely village with loads going on, very lively in the summer. Good Luck.
