I’m visiting from Canada. Is there a cost associated with getting cash from the bank ABM machine?

It's very rare to find an ATM that doesn't charge some type of commission.

I would use a credit or debit card (if the vendor takes debit). Taking money out of banks used to be (until last year) fairly inexpensive, you just needed to check the fee at a few banks, some were more than others. Now every bank I have tried demands you not only pay the fee but use their exchange rate which are all rip offs.
When you pay with your card choose 'EURO' not Candadian $. Your bank/card company gives you a favorable rate, if you choose Canadian on the machine that seller is choosing your exchange rate

Agree you should use debit cards rather than cash for purchases and remember to click the € amount rather than the 'dynamic conversion rate'.
Here's a guide for Canadians abroad:
costs from ATM machines can be considerable ...try using machines of larger banks such as Santander or even Unicaja ...you can always cancel the transaction if the quoted cost is exorbitant ...avoid those machines on corners or in shops...usually carry a high charge
Get a Wise or Revolut multi currency card. You can refund it in one minute from your home account. Then you can use it all over in euros, £, kroner etc.. there are cash machines that don’t charge, just check screen before pressing ok. Everywhere takes cards now anyway.
