Return of damage deposit for a rental property

I rented a property in Costa del Sol for 4 months. I made a damage deposit of one month's rent. It has been 35 days since we left and we have not received our damage deposit. We have also not been notified that any damages were assessed.
Can anyone tell me if there is any kind of legal obligation of the landlord regarding return of the damage deposit? How long does the landlord have to notify me re damages and then to return the deposit (less his claims)?
