Age Limits:
The standard contractual age is up to 75 years. From 76 years of age a one-off surcharge will be made when initially contracting the Health Plan Classic. There is no upper age limit for maintaining your health cover, once contracted.

Do you know how to circumvent the question of age David? When I want to fill in the questionnaire in order to get an offer, I absoliuely cannot put in my age (81), it only goes up to 75. So there is no way to send it. Any ideas? Many thanks. Have a great Sunday!

David, can I ask your advice on my case, age 61, EU national now 4 years resident in Spain. I have a pre-existing condition (heart surgery in 2017) any of the insurance companies I have contacted blankly refuse to give cover at all. Thanks

Sorry no idea, I only read the quote, perhaps you should call them. (From 76 years of age a one-off surcharge will be made when initially contracting the Health Plan Classic)

Pre-existing condition - Yes that's a problem for private health cover, they have to be declared, the condition is either not included or they refuse cover, then back to state cover only, in the case of Brits the NHS S1 if 65 or over.
EU residents are entitled to free health care in Spain for the first 3 months of their stay. They just need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
On the other hand, if you are staying for the long-run (over 90 days), then you’ll need to hire a private health insurance contract, no matter if you are from the EU or not.

I would recommend going to a broker as they have multiple companies they represent.

My wife was 76 next birthday last year when we were looking for health care to support our NLV, so we scraped in with Sanitas as she was still 75. Our timing of application was within 2 months of her birthday and we were lucky. Asssa https://www.asssa.es/en/ also have less of an age issue but were more expensive. As stated try a broker who knows. However preconditions at that age will more or less make it impossible. We used www.bmispain.com Ask for Jeremy Ryan. Very helpful.
