Thank you all for your input so far, concerning "private health insurance for an oldie".
I have now an offer from DKV (the only one accepting me (81). Please let me know if, and what, experience you might have had with this company, in order to help me make up my mind, before I commit myself.  Yours, grateful:
Zaa

Me and my husband have had health insurance with DKV for four years.  My husband had a problem with his hip and DKV referred him quickly to a consultant.  His diagnosis was that he needed a hip replacement.  DKV promptly approved this and he booked an appointment for the operation one week later.  The paperwork was dealt with efficiently.  We were highly satisfied with the service DKV provided.

Hello TeresaB,  have many grateful thanks for your kindness in answering my quesrtion, and for the most encouraging answer itself. I hope your husband enjoys his new hip and a painless life (as far as his hip is concerned, at least!). Zaa

Yes 17 months on and he’s like a new man.  He can walk the dogs and is pain free.  If we’d been in the UK he’d have probably had to wait 2-3 years for the op and then his physical health would have deteriorated so much that he’d never have regained the mobility he should have 😎
