I took 200 euros out of my account using a banks ATM. I did this because I thought the charges would be less.  I have a transaction fee of £3.42 and a non  sterling cash fee of £4.70

Can anyone explain what these charges are?  When I am asked for sterling or euros which should I select?

Should I open a bank account here and just transfer my money to it. I am here till May and then back again later next year.

It'll save you a lot of hassle to have a bank account here. Sabadell are good. It's also worth looking into the money transfer companies, you'll find their details on comparison sites. You can save yourself a hefty charge by using them instead of bank to bank transfers.

Good luck and Happy New Year!

Personally I don't know as I haven't opened my account yet, but it surely  it must be similar to a UK bank, where they may charge a monthly fee...but someone already living there will have to answer that correctly for you. I'm going 5th of July so I will find out:)

It's not much, I can't recall the exact amount. But, it's certainly nothing like the amount taking money from your UK bank and converting it the additional charge for the service adds up to! If you go to a Sabadell branch, they have English speaking staff and will give you all the details.

You should pay in euros. However what you really need is say a Starling bank account where you can open a euro account.
