Hi we have kestrels on our urbanisation they nest somewhere within it lot smaller than the honey buzzards that fly over us

We initially thought Kestrel too, but having researched a fair bit and watched these birds every day for weeks now, the Kestrel is a much smaller bird than these with a wingspan of only 65-82 cm or 26-32 ins. These birds have a huge wingspan probably twice the size and they never hover. I’ve seen them swoop down but never hover - which is so typical of the Kestrel. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to think about this and answer. I have the email address of a raptor specialist and I’m going to send him the photo and see what he says.

Having looked at the photos of the Honey Buzzard, that does look very similar but these three are not passing through by the looks of things, they appear to be resident.

Having looked at photos of booted eagles, I think you could be right, the colours are right, the feathering at the end of the wings plus the fanned tail.
Let me know how you get on. I’m not an expert but we did a comparison with the photos of the birds together with the descriptions on the notice boards in Casares and they seemed to be booted eagles to me.
In any case, they are fab to watch and we are lucky to enjoy them whilst at home.
