Hi there,  we are coming to Benalmadena on the 23rd of this month and we are naturally concerned about the Coronavirus. We are in two minds wether to cancel our holiday or not. So, how badly affected is the area? Is there still a lot of tourists, or is the resort a lot quieter than normal.  Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you

Good evening MandyMC,

Difficult one to answer. I live here and the situation is changing day to day. On the Costa del Sol we have around 75 cases of the virus. Most of these are in Malaga City a couple in Fuengirola and Marbella is similar. I am not aware of any cases in Benalmadena at the moment BUT today i heard that the Spanish Government has issued a state of Alert (contrary to what you see on Sky TV) This is not a State of Emergency but it gives the government powers to control the movement of people in certain areas and take over private hospitals etc. The Costa del Sol has been declared as a special area because it is so important to the Spanish economy and they are doing their best to contain the virus but we know it will get worse before it improves.

Simply put. I live here and I am not unduly worried but equally if you can cancell and rebook without loss of funds it may be more sensible

Regards and best wishes

Bill

Hi Geoff here from Bournemouth

I am currently in benalmadena(arrived on the 11th due back 22nd)

Before I set off I asked the question about disruption of holiday and maybe lockdown (which may happen) I was told by my travel agent(Hays travel) that they would cover any extra costs(I assume hotel re booking of flights etc)

With regard to you question whether to cancel or not I was told you could only cancel and get a refund if the foreign office(F.C.O.) recommend not to travel to a certain country(or some part of it)

Since you wrote your post things re Spain have changed jet2cancelled all flights and tui have cancelled bookings for the next few days.

I wait and see how my holiday develops but it's rumoured Spanish government thinking of putting ALL of the country in lockdown (still to be confirmed)

Hi Bill

Thanks for your reply. Sadly we have decided to cancel our holiday. I have diabetes therefore my immune system is already compromised. As from today, Jet2 and TUI have cancelled all their flights to Spain. We need EasyJet to cancel theirs so we can get our money back! Thanks for your reply Bill

Hi Geoff. Just read your post and yes the situation is moving very fast. Spain should have quarantined Madrid and because he did not it appears that many of the locals who have second homes on the Costa del Sol have just driven down or caught the train down and I am sure some of them will have the virus. Good luck with the holiday and I hope you get home safe. Ps I lived in weymouth for years and worked in ferndown. Regards Bill
