Electricity Consumption in Empty Apartment
Hi,
I have noticed that we are getting billed for electricity consumption… even though the apartment had been empty for several months.
Can anyone please advise if this should be the case?

Very helpful member
I'm sure that's there standing charge, rather than usage.
Hi, Perhaps you have the main electricity switch still on?

No, there is a standing charge… but the itemised bill states that there is actual consumption also!?
Thanks

Hi Chris,
Do you mean in the electric box (within the apartment?
Should all switches be off if the apartment is empty?
Regards,
Isa

This has happened to me this year after leaving apartment in May.
Electric bill shows usage and standing/tax charges.
Only 6 euros usage each bill.
I normally switch the electricity off at the main switch in the fuse box, so I was surprised when I started seeing usage charges.
I can't be 100% sure I switched off the main supply, but never failed to before, I'll need to check when I go to the apartment later in the year.

Hi Isa,
Even when the main electricity switch is off there usually is a service charge plus IVA.
If you don't switch off the main supply when your not there, at least switch off the water heater, TV, Internet router, and even mosquito killing devices that are plugged in the wall sockets.

Correct.
However there is a usage line on the bill, which should be 0 if you have not been in the property for the dates covered by the bill.
My bill has shown usage for the last two periods that I have not been there.
Maybe I forgot to switch my electric off at the fuse box.
I'll find out when I next go to Spain.
If I left the electricity on it will be the first time in ten years.
