Hi, I would greatly appreciate any advice with regard to opening an account in Spanish please. We are an Irish couple who are renting long term from next month. We have endeavoured to get an NIE number but cannot get an appointment at the police station. We opened a non-resident account with Sabadell who required a health plan. We thought we would go for residencia so had to get a particular plan costing 190 a month. Their yearly fee comes to 120 a year. We are being charged 266 euro for the residencia all-in. Do these figures seem okay to anyone else? We also had to give four months rent in advance and one month agency fee. We just feel we are handing out money left, right and centre and it's very stressful and draining on our resources. If anyone could offer any advice we would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

I'm confused are you in Ireland now or Spain? You say renting long term from next month, you could have got an NIE number from the Spanish  Embassy in Dublin. https://mynie.co.uk/nie-number-spanish-embassy/

Do you have an Irish EU passport or British as in NI.

If in Spain you should be about to get an NIE number from the National police,

How long do you call a long rental are you planning to live here on a permanent basis?

With an NIE number and address you could have opened an on line Euro account for free which is all you need https://n26.com/en-es/bank-account

You could get a free consultation with these people all sounds very confusing, https://upsticks.es/book-a-call/

Hi David,

Thank you for your reply, very helpful. We both have EU passports.  I tried for weeks to get an appointment win the police station and it is nigh on impossible. We will have to go to a solicitor to organise this. Our rental contract is for one year but we can extend it. If we like it here we will then sell our house and buy property here. I thought it would have been easier to get an NIE number and we found this apartment by chance and trying to get all this organised has been very stressful. Thank you very much for the links.

Noel

The monthly charge appears to be reasonable. Health insurance is always expensive and depends on age. Euro 1200 per person for heath insurance is normal. It seems the quote includes residence insurance as well which is easily Euro 350 per year. The bank is fee reasonable since Santander charges Euro 16 per month.

In Spain good private heath insurance is 'very cheap indeed' about a third of UK. .

Hi, We were in a similar situation but UK nationals awaiting our NLV (Visa) but managed to open a bank account with our passport with BBVA. We did this at the branch and unless you want certain services (we didn’t) it is free.

I do not know how old you are but we are pension age and we were also told the same that we needed Private Health Insurance ..... not true!  Our S1 are active but until our visa arrives with the NIE number we cannot register it...... in the meantime, if we need anything we go private which so far has not been expensive. Also, we noted on a quote for private health we were discluded from most benefits for the first 9/10 months so did not seem worth the bother.

Hope this helps?

Thank you everyone for all your assistance here. I have to say this forum has beena great help to us. We registered with N26 free online banking and Olivenet as the internet provider.  I also peservered and got the NIE number which I obviously needed for these services. We will shop around now for private health insurance. It has really been a learning curve for us both but as we cross each hurdle it feels like an achievement. Thank you again.
