Is it worth bringing my car to Spain when I take up permanent residency?

same old question as seen on many occasions, is it worth bringing my car to Spain when I take up permanent residency next year. Like to know where ans what sort of price I can expect to pay for conversion of a 2008 fiat punto to drive in the antequera area.

As you probably already know you can keep a UK car in Spain for six months in any one year but after 6 months it should either be taken out of the country or put on Spanish plates.

It can cost around €1000 to transfer the car to Spanish plates, which includes headlight changes, mechanical inspection etc.

The main expense is the Import Tax, apparently the newer the car, the higher the tax.

There are often people or companies who will do the paperwork for you and help you through the process - You could ask around in your area for a personal recommendation for someone to do this for you.

Our neighbours who are resident mostly sold their cars, either before they came (better price!) or after they drove here (not such a good price) and then bought a Spanish vehicle from a reputable/recommended dealer. If the dealer is good they should do all the paperwork for you when buying the car, making it a smooth process.

Hope this helps.
