How do the busses work. Do you pay when entering or do you need prepurchased tickets? Are all rides the same price or do they vary depending on distance?

For bus journeys to other towns I recommend you check Alsa who provide most of the bus routes around Torrox: Buses in Costa del Sol.
Once you register on your phone you get the best fares but, most importantly, you are guaranteed a seat in your chosen bus. Simply show your online ticket.That can be very useful!
I believe there are other services to Torrox Pueblo-Costa but someone else may be able to help you
