So Book depository has closed(I never knew that Amazon had bought in 2011) so where do I buy my books from the UK ?

One problem is that in Spain you never know that an unpleasant charge may be incurred when your book is delivered  despite some sellers quoting postage and IVA ie I ordered a secondhand out of print book from iberlibro which is the spanish side of Abe-so the book was €

Precio del libro: EUR 41,97
Envío: EUR 16,30
IVA estimado: EUR 2,33 =€60.60 paid total

However on picking up iVA and extracarvas €31.20 so my 41.97 book had total now of €91.80!!!OK so I,m now taking the issue up as the bookseller was using a professional courier parcel2go which dealing with international delivery have a duty of care to quote correctly BE WARNED

Anyway Wordery will deliver free of charge on new books ,Awesome books ,amazon es now also have new and secondhand book section , Waterstones and blackballs will deliver for a cost but the link may be of help

of course its worth keeping your eyes on Cudeca and other charity shops

The "unpleasant charge" is not due to  Spanish policies. It's another of those Brexit sunlit uplands. An "unpleasant charge" caused completely by the UK. Hopefully, one day, we will be able to trade easily again across our own continent.

Surely the point is that after several years post Brexit the seller should have known of & warned of potential extra charges

Immediately after Brexit I stopped ordering from European suppliers into UK as they warned of extra charges but couldn’t say what they might be. I have again started ordering EU>UK as they now seem to understand the rules & I have had no surprises

Would have thought UK>EU would be same & would be interested to hear what Chatsworths supplier says

What concerns me is the disparity of this

Ie wordery includes free delivery but new books

Amazo es now has new and secondhand

But using the same portal ie ibrolibro you get one book delivered from Uk and no charge and yet the other some 30€ surcharge

Exactly - the online book portals particular secondhand rare need to get their act together so we as customers decide at point of sale whether we buy the book

Result -the bookseller has refunded the €30  but added

“Hello, I have now checked with both ABE Books and Parcel2Go and they both confirm what I said previously - the extra charge that you had to pay to receive your book is one levied by Spanish customs as an import charge of some kind. It is nothing to do with postage costs and the courier has no alternative but to ask for it before delivering an item going into the EU from a non-EU country. A purchase that you made in IberLibro did not have any extra charges as this operates within the EU where there is free movement between member countries”

https://www.parcel2go.com/parcel-delivery/spain-mainland-only

Their partners incl UPS deliver in Spain  EXTRACt from UPS website

“Spain Customs and Regulations

The first thing you need to know is that your shipment to Spain is considered an international shipment. Due to your parcels crossing country borders, you will be classified as an exporter and since Brexit has come into effect on 1st January 2021, a shipment to Spain is treated the same as any worldwide shipment. Meaning the shipment must clear customs and requires additional documentation such as a commercial invoice and may be subject to additional export fees and duties. You will also need an Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number, which is used to track and register customs information in the EU.

A contract of sale of goods is a contract by which the seller transfers or agrees to transfer the property in goods to the buyer for a money consideration, called the price.

Conclusion the Bookseller or seller in UK has a requirement and a duty of care to the buyer to be clear on any charges that maybe levied ,likewise their carrier owes the same duty to the seller .Its unsatisfactory if both the seller and his carrier are not clear and their business will suffer

I find it incredible that I can order 2 books from the same website -one the courier demands 30€ to release book and the other is delivered with no surcharge

Thanks for the update.

As said I've been able to import goods EU>UK without issue. Having thought about this I believe all my items have fallen within the UK Gov'ts Trade Tariff schedule UK Trade Tariff tool & therefore the duty due is clear to EU sellers & they can include within their price offer.

It may be that Spain does not operate such a tool, &/or your items are not classified?
