Hi all, My wife and I (both over age 65) are hoping to move to Spain and wondered that if we apply for an S1 for healthcare in Spain will we still be able to get NHS healthcare in the UK if we return to the UK for a while to visit relatives. Many thanks.

This is the guide  if you move to Spain

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/healthcare-in-spain-including-the-balearic-and-canary-islands#getting-treatment-in-the-uk

Extracts:

If you are a UK national and move to the EU, you should not expect to be able to use NHS services for free when visiting the UK unless you have an EHIC, PRC or S2 to show your healthcare costs are funded by the EU country in which you now live, or another exemption applies.

I found the NHS phone number shown on the S1 webpage is very helpful if you have questions.

The bottom line is take out travel insurance from Spain, a good idea anyway, to cover any NHS costs when back in UK

Hi and many thanks for the Link. Very useful. I knew we needed an S1 to get healthcare in Europe but did not know that we needed an S2 if we needed healthcare in the UK after we have become an EU Resident.

We got our NLV at the end of 2022. We used private healthcare through Sanitas. Which we propose to retain at our renewal. We did not get an S1. My question therefore is, what is the criteria for losing auto rights to NHS care, just living in Spain or living in Spain and activating an S1? I cannot see this defined and wondered if anyone had asked??

Since UK is no longer an EU/EEA country there is no automatic right to use INSS which is equivalent to NHS.

Effectively NHS pays the Spanish equivalent body the contributions you no longer pay in UK. If you have a DNI and padron you get a health card. Here is the link to NHS - they're very helpful.

I also discovered a link where you can apply online in Spain once you have your S1 forms, DNI, padron. Saves a lot of time
