Hi all, thank you for letting me join your forum! This is my first post, and hopefully it isn't a dumb question. I am just looking into retiring to Spain with my partner, who is of retirement age. Would his S1 document cover me as well? We're civil partners, and I am under state pension age but r...

Hi Carl. I am married and was able to get cover riding on the back of my husband's S1.  Now I am 66 I have my own S1.  I have submitted it online to INSS on 15 May but have still not heard back.  You can check its online status but mine says 'in study'.  I think you will be covered.  From memory cover applies to "family members."

That's not a dumb question Carl59, it's quite important. We had a similar situation and had to ask the dwp to put the partner on the S1 as a dependant as under retirement age and then you both get the spanish health cards. It wasn't a problem but we are married not civil partnership but presume the rules are the same. Once you reach retirement age you should request an S1 in your own right. This was just prior to brexit but no doubt someone with more recent knowledge will say if the system has changed. Hope this helps.

Hi Andrew, thank you for the info, very helpful. I guess I just need to find out if Spanish law treats civil partnerships the same as marriage, or as favourably as in UK.

As long as the UK DWP put your partner on your S1 from DWP as a dependant they will get the same health cover as you. The spanish health office just want the names on the S1 (together with Padron, residence card, passport etc) to issue the health cards.

Your first port of call then is NHS Overseas Abroad, UK, they are very helpful.
