Thank you very much. It looks like we will have a busy week driving around checking out the various villages.  I’m a bit nervous about living up in the mountains as I keep getting told about the terrible roads 🙄

You might consider Torrox too. Personally I would not think of Competa it's too far from the coast and the road to it is an awful mountain road.

Frigiliana is expensive.

Agree re Competa, we're at the bottom of the Competa road, in Algarrobo & do visit Competa occasionally. OK for a day trip, wouldn't like to do that road regularly were we to be based at the top.

We visit Torrox & Frig, lovely towns & always plenty of Brit voices heard. We do like Algarrobo, but its not the tourist honeypot of Torrox & Frig, very Spanish & few Brits here.

Something to consider is whether you want the comfort of Brits around you, or are happy with a mainly Spanish town

Thank you, Competa is slowly ending up at the bottom of my list as I am a bad enough passenger driving on the M62 so tackling mountain roads in the dark with my husband driving doesnt sound like fun :-)

We are looking at this house as a holiday home as my husband wont give up working for at least another 6 years.

In your opinion would you choose a typical spanish village which was our original idea (Alhama de Granada or Arenas del Rey) or go for an area with lots of expats. As long as we have shops and restaurants we are happy

Thank you for sharing your opinions as they really help.....

Well, we went for a Spanish town & are happy to have our holiday home in Algarrobo. Couple of restaurants we go to plus loads in A,Costa & a short drive to Torre & Torrox. There are bakeries here & small supermarkets but we tend to shop at Lidl/Mercadona (A Costa) or the large centre of El Ingenio between Torre & Velez

Brilliant thank you very much. Its so confusing and there are so many houses to choose from.

I think narrowing down the area when we come over for a week will be the best thing to do this time

"...Frigiliana is expensive..." ONLY if you can't afford to buy a property in that particular location.

Just sayin'

Hi, my partner and I went out to Malaga in February to visit the towns we had set our minds on.
Competa was number one until we did the dreaded journey up the mountain roads! Dont get me wrong, it’s stunning, but to do that journey on a regular basis is just so impractical, for us anyway. We met some ex pats who lived in different areas of Malaga and all said it was best to rent somewhere first to get the feel of a place and if it’s right for you. We do not want to move again, so really need to be sure that it’s right. At the moment we are still trying to sell our house in Cornwall so everything still very early days for us.
Good luck for the future and I hope you find a wonderful home 😊

Hi Nicky. We are initially looking for a holiday home to use for the next  4 or 5  yrs so we can get more familiar with the area. Then the plan is to sell up in the UK. We are flying out on the 16th Sept for 1 week  unless air traffic control here in the UK says different :)

We are renting a house in Algarrobo for the week and plan on exploring surrounding villages.

Its mind blowing trying to choose an area. There are so many cheap country houses for sale and we are tempted but then I get the sensible head on and think we should be within 20 minutes of the coast and maybe 1 hour distance from Malaga but where this would be is another question.

Fingers crossed we find the perfect location in September

Hi

I would go back to basics as the areas u could choose 90 mins fro Airport are endless.I am sure you have  a set of criteria eg coastal/ inland, nr good bus routes or Tain routes, villa / semi / terraced- urbanisation or country etc etc.

We rented for a long time before we chose our area- and I believe picking the area suitable for you would be the priority over type of property .We ended up in Estepona with a holiday home .

Happy days

Phil
