Hi ,

We are a English / Austrian family considering re locating from the UK to Spain ..in search of better weather and lifestyle and living off a services pension.. perhaps to Alhaurin de la Torre or Estopona .. we would be interested to hear of any views as to the pros and cons of living in both areas .. of particular concern is crime as we have heard that there are a lot of burglaries with the occupiers being incapacitated by gas;  that property prices for non  Spanish are greatly inflated and do not reflect there true value ... we are also concerned that it would be difficult for our 18 year old son to find any work or opportunities for development .. any responses would be appreciated ..

regards Richard

Not sure about the crime , but your son will definitely find it hard to get work , 27% of young Spaniards are out of work , and even if your son is fluent in Spanish, Spaniards will always take preference over expats , we had this issue with our daughter , after one and a half years , she had to leave and get a job in the UK, she had a degree and speaks four languges .

Yes racism is rife in Spain as many Spanish feel that their country is being invaded by foreigners.  Our Spanish neighbours have been hostile and harassed us in an attempt to get us to leave the urbanization.

Cannot speak for A d l T, but we find the Spanish to be friendly & our area safe. We're in Algarrobo, east of Malaga which is almost wholly Spanish, certainly little ex pat community here, although there are more English close by in Torrox & Frigiliana for example. Perhaps as there are fewer "foreigners" on the east side the Spanish are more tolerant. You'll find property prices lower here also

I totally agree with you Andrew. I’ve found the Spanish to be very kind and helpful and have several Spanish friends. I remember chatting to an English man a few years ago and asking him how good his Spanish was. His reply “if they can’t be bothered to learn English why should I learn Spanish “!
