Hi John,
I am no expert at this but I can share what I have learned. I did let a room in my house the first year I was here on AirBnB. I decided it wasn't for me although I met some lovely folks. You do have to be fairly organized, ready to do alot of washing and cleaning (particularly in this new age we live), report each let to the authorities (but that is not too difficult) and of course pay tax on your earnings. As a Non Resident you may find that about 24% but please speak to an accountant to verify this as there would be expenses. As you are not in Spain all the time you would of course have to hire someone to manage the process. Lots of people do that in Spain and lots of them are making money. Just a bit more complicated now.
As for letting long term from what I have learned you would definitely not want to pursue that without professional assistance. There are all sorts of rules to protect tenants (which is great) but you do not want to find yourself in a situation where you cannot get a person out. Lots of people rent for part of the year so that the owner themselves can stay when they wish. This is very common but if I were you I would talk to a bunch of professionals in your area and get as much advice as possible.
It may not be an immediate cash cow but given how many are doing just what you wish to do over the long term, if you set things up right at the beginning and do not try to cut corners (just not wise in Spain) then you should be able to make things work out with a financial gain. There are alot of different types of organizations and people providing a variety of services like this in Spain. I am sure you can find plenty local to you.
Good luck!
