Hi, I'm Martin and Mary, new to this site. We have owned a one bed apartment on mijas golf for 17 years.we know many English and Spanish friends both on the complex and in the area. Without wishing to vent anger on my first post!! Why the hell since Brexit the Spanish government treat my wife and I as newbies? Non lucrative visa, hello we have paid and still do taxes, community fees, car tax etc etc for 12 months but only allowed a 180 day split 90 day allowance to stay. Crass and bullshit either we stay 6 months or 12 months? Spice, halfpenny and bowl springs to mind for those who remember that. Sorry and apologies for rant but we wish all well. Best regards Martyn charlton.
I think another question is 'why, we human beings think we are so special?". The Government does not care about us and never has. Since the UK is out of the EU their citizens are just like any other global citizen - that are NOT part of the EU. Rules have changed, policies have changed, the world has changed.....why do we humans continue to think things should stay the same just for US? Why do we think the rules should be adapted just for US?
I am also sorry about having to say this but for years now we have heard people venting on this Forum re topics in the fallout from Brexit. Its normal human behavior to ignore things until they appear in 'our backyard' and then be so suddenly 'incensed' with the unjustice of it all! I believe we must all learn to suck it up - things will not get any easier for anyone.

Hi Kerri, we are all entitled to our own opinion, I'm looking at the matter from the point of view freedom of movement obviously without time restrictions would benefit the Spanish government and tourists/long stay accordingly.

It's nothing to do with the Spanish government, the restrictions apply to ALL EU member states, and those that are in the Schengen zone. The UK is no longer in Schengen and, yes, our freedom of movement is curtailed. But, it's curtailed in all Schengen zone countries, it's out of the Spanish government's hands. I mean, if this was not the case then N Ireland wouldn't be having problems right now, would it?
This is a direct, predictable, and serious consequence of Brexit. The UK decided it wanted to restrict the movement of people into the country from the EU but, the other side of that is that our movements around the EU would also be restricted. For holiday makers it's an inconvenience. For people who work between the UK and EU it's a disaster. Fot those of us who live in the EU, it's a severe imposition on our hitherto right to move freely in the union. If I want to visit friends and family in other EU member states, I've got 90 days to do it in, even though I am a resident here in Spain. It's what we have got to live with so, no point in getting irate, especially towards the Spanish government. They are as powerless as you and I are, unless the UK government hold another referendum and the people vote to Rejoin.

The issue is whether Martin and others in same predicament also have a place in UK and go between them ie Like swallows
the link shows the issues incl the tax implications
Personally I voted against BREXIT as I was resident in UK and just never found any convincing argument for voting for it and I get really upset with people boasting about the majority (a marginal 48/52 )and a lot of distorted facts and lies .anyway the arrogance still exists in the UK as demonstrated by Daily mail comments column and I,ve no desire to return to the UK .They made their decision and they can face the consequences but I do feel sorry for the 48% who have to bear the consequences of others ! I saw in bournemouth the direct prejudice show towards my spanish wife and daughter for choosing to speak spanish (they also speak English )and the arrogance of the Uk in making out its a world power -its not!!
When I applied for NIE etc before expiry it became apparent that a lot of expats didn't act on getting their residency till the last minute and this also included "swallows"therefore with covid (and Boris taking his time to sort matters out ) then it became real task Excuse my rant but it has to be said!!
On a positive note I made my decision for a new life here in spain and yes there are some negatives but compared with the UK( England ) I am in a much better place both economically and lifestyle

Good morning jean, thank you for your reply. We have looked into the non-lucrative visa and in our opinion too complex and involves a large roll of red tape!! It would be nice to meet but we are not in spain until december-march.
regards,
martyn & mary.

This is an issue I feel quite strongly about even though it doesnt effect me in the slightest. I do own a house in England but I have been resident here for many years and have no intention of living in the uk again.
For me, the people who bought property here before Brexit did so on the understanding they could stay up to 182 days of the year. For example, spend 5/6 months here over winter to avoid pumping their life savings into the gas meter and rent it out in summer to cover some of the costs.
Now, due to something they probably didn´t even vote for they can no longer do so (although I was recently chatting to somebody who was complaining about this situation and it later came out they both voted for it...turkeys and xmas come to mind).
Just doesn´t seem fair to apply this outcome retrospectively. People who buy now do so knowing the new rules. Those from before Brexit should feel robbed. Spain was happy to take the cash from them and will continue to do so so why should they move the goalposts?
You can still stay for 180 days a year . Its the “rolling “ bit that is limi
