Hello, I've been a resident in Spain for over 5 years. I'm thinking of buying a car. I will need to get a Spanish driving licence but have been told , by joe public, that I would have to hand in my UK licence. Is this true or can I keep both? Appreciate any advice. Thanks in anticipation, Andy

Hi JJ thanks for your response. What happens on returns to the UK, although with Brexit things may change from what they are.

Hi,
You can't apply for a UK one, as you need a UK address. We have to change to Spanish licences before the end of this year anyway so you may as well do it. A Spanish licence is valid for driving in other countries, including the UK.

Hi thanks for the info, although I have a c/o address in the UK I suppose with Brexit things will be more strict and complicated. I go back 5 to 6 times a year but will not be classed as resident I suppose.

I take it you are legally here, ie have your Residence green card/paper?
This is my understanding, checkable with CAB Spain.
As a UK citizen, resident of Spain, you cannot drive a) a UK registered car b) drive with a UK licence (there seems to be controversy as to whether you can continue to drive until you UK licence expires, but this is not generally accepted by Guardia.)
Post Brexit, all UK citizens who are Residents in Spain must change their UK licence to Spanish.
This exchange should either have taken place, or the authorities should have been informed of the intention to exchange, before 31st January.
After December 2020, UK driving licences will not be accepted in EU countries and I understand International Driving Licences will be required for UK citizens to drive throughout Europe. This will affect those domiciled in UK as well as those living legally in EU States.
I've got my Spanish licence. Should I ever return to live in UK, I will simply exchange back.
You need to see a lawyer very fast.

Thanks Ali, yes I'm legally here but can foresee complications in uk with brexit. I'm going back to uk on Saturday for a couple of weeks so will be seeing a solicitor whilst there as I have many questions to ask.

Hi
Last February we took Spainish residency. All went smoothly.
My husband then sent his UK licence off to have it exchanged for a Spainish one last April 2019. It is still not back and we are told the back log is vast. He has a piece of official paper so he can drive in Spain but recently we needed to hire a car and Hertz would not except it
Luckily I still had my UK licence, as it is still valid, so I drove .
Have a fall back if you can.
