Hola everyone, I'm planning a move to the Nerja area and would like to bring my car and / or with me. I've looked on line to try and find out how expensive and complicated it would be to register either vehicles but the information seems very out of date.

I believe I can drive on UK plates for 6 months, is this still the case or old information. My car is a little 12 year old convertible which I'd like to keep as they're very difficult to find in Spain and my motorcycle is 18 years old but excellent condition and also hard to find.

I've noticed that used cars are ridiculously expensive even for a 10 year old Fiat Punto or Ford Fiesta compared to UK prices.

Any help or info much appreciated,  Aidan.

Hi , yes you can drive your own car for up to 6 months before you need to register it. We didnt bother doing that , we bought a 1 year old Seat Ibiza for €10,000 which would have cost €15000 in Ireland...cars are actually very cheaper here ( much cheaper than Ireland anyway )

Thanks Paul, you're right, I've noticed that new and nearly new cars in Spain are literally 1000's cheaper than UK (& Ireland) but I've never understood why that doesn't filter down to older cars.

I wouldn't want to spend €10,000 on a car because that's approximately 2 years rent on a 2 bed property in Frigiliana.

I've since discovered coches.net which has a lot of private car ads at reasonable prices.... without the used car salesman's slice added ! The search goes on......

Hey again

We decided against a private purchase as we felt we would have no comeback if there was a problem. We felt more comfortable with a reputable buyer. We used Safamotors who have a few outlets in Malaga. A good professional company. You would prob get a good 3-4 year old small car there for 5-6k. Best of luck - Paul

Hi , sorry for delay, we've been away in a WiFi-free wilderness.....Devon !

Had a look at safamotors, got a good selection of quality cars as you say. Will certainly check out their stock nearer he time of our arrival. Thanks for your help.

Hi. I have bought two new cars in Spain in the last few years. nobody knows why used are so expensive. Be careful buying used unless from a dealer. A lot of paperwork. Most used cars in Spain are ex hire avoid like hell. Most people buy new and drive into the ground. The big car brand offer big discounts I bought a new duster with lots of extras for 15k. I hope to keep it for years
