Can anyone recommend a good working town to stay between Malaga and La Cala for a few months in the winter, on the coast with train/good transport and where both locals and ex pats live with things to do like exercise classes, pub quizzes and any other activities for English speakers?

Carvajal, Torreblanca, Los Boliches all suit your requirements. I think Los Boliches would be your best bet or Fuengirola if you want more action. Los Boliches is delightful and has a real Spanish flavour. There are a lot of expats and Scandinavians there. All those are on the train line which is fantastic and runs every 20 mins.

Thank you for the advice. I will do some research and see if I can find a winter rental.
