France suggested the uk should join the Schengen zone to allow freedom of movement in Europe, brilliant idea and would alleviate

all the chaos at ports and stop this 180 day stay crap!! apparently the article did mention other non-European members have joined

the zone and it works and why wouldn't it?

The problem being the government can not see the wood for the trees and its obviously a simple solution to a dire problem encountered by holiday makers and transport companies.

Joining the Schengen zone would be impossible, or they would not be able to stamp your passport and limit your 90 stay within, Ireland cannot join dues the the open border with NI - UK..

The only way UK could be part of Schengen would be to allow 'Freedom Of Movement', so would have to re-join the EU - The Single Market EEA/EFTA.  Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. (Switzerland signed the Agreement on the 'Free Movement of Persons' (AFMP) in 2002) and joined in 2008.   Bulgaria · Romania · Croatia · Cyprus · Ireland · did not join Schengen.

Ireland has a free travel agreement with UK which prevented it joining, UK never wanted to join and kept it's border checks.

Yes, that would be excellent but, unfortunately, it is not going to happen. The British people were totally misled into blind walking into Brexit. As one of direct consequences the NHS is collapsing with a shortage of 50000 nurses and several thousands of doctors. Even before the Brexit UK would not entertain joining the Schengen scheme.

Any deal with the France is doomed, why stop refugees who prefer to claim asylum in UK (boats).

As somebody who is British but lives in Spain, I have no issue with border checks, just part of travel. There again, I am legal.
