Driving in Spain

I am driving to Spain from Edinburgh. We are getting the ferry from Plymouth to Santander and then I will be driving to Competa, Malaga. We intend staying in Spain for 6-8 months and hope to move there permanently if we find a property we like. My insurance in the UK can only insure my car for 3 months in Spain. How do I insure my car for the rest of my time in Spain? Can I stay longer than 6 months in Spain? Can my car remain in Spain for longer than 6 months? What are the rules regarding this issue? We are both EU citizens so Brexit does not apply to us. Thank you.
