Car insurance in UK for Spanish resident/licence holder

Hi All

I wonder if anyone has the found a UK insurer for a car left in the UK for us to use when we return there. We are now Spanish residents and have just exchanged our UK licences for Spanish ones and we are having real trouble getting any kind of competitive quote.  Does anyone know if you can tax a car using a temporary insurance policy (28 days or similar)?  Beginning to think it's not worth keeping the small run-around (value under £1,000) we have in the UK.  We'll do less 2,000 miles pa. and the rest of the time it will be parked on M-i-L's drive.  We do have a UK address but no safe parking there.
