Hi everyone. I spend around three months a year in Spain. I am spending six weeks there this summer. I usually hire a car from a company near the airport but the cost for six weeks is too expensive. I’m considering either driving from the UK or buying a second hand car in Spain. Can anyone recommend a good place to buy a car or a long term lease company? Thank you

The answer is simple 'drive' if hire price too high, you need to be a resident.

If a foreigner decides to buy a car in Spain, they must provide the following documents:

  • An official resident document;
  • A title deed in Spain;
  • A rental agreement for an apartment in Spain;
  • NIE;
  • Municipal registration.

Thanks David. Let’s assume I have Residencia, NIE etc. Do you have any advice or information as to buying a second hand car?

Second hand cars in reasonable condition very expensive here, the number plate does not show age, most Spanish keep for a long time, and most second hand have very high mileage, you are best to buy from a main dealer with a full warranty. This link gives you a good idea of prices, non- main dealer. Like an 18 years old BMW 1 series for 7K with 173K miles on the clock. . https://automoviles21.es/

Like I said for a short period like 6 weeks you are better to drive your own car here.

In fact the number plate does show age, although not directly by year. The first letter, then 2nd represents age.

Don't think they used A, so 1234B.. is earliest in current format (You'll see older vehicles with province plates, MA, GR, M etc)

They then use the second letter, BBB being older than BYY. Once all the B's allocated, its C etc

My 2016 motorcycle is J reg, our current almost new hire car is LWT, soon you'll see brand new M reg cars

Have a look at car reg's as you drive around, you'll soon relate plate letter to age.

Thanks for that, I never noticed, however, they don't seem to have the same fascination about the plate and seem to keep a long time. Most used car seem to have high mileage and very high priced compared to UK.

There is a Swedish guy near Marbella called Oscar who rents cars long term at a good price. They are wrecks but they get you from a to b. Company is called Costa Car Rental.

Price is Euros 400 a month.

I used them for 4 months. If you are happy to drive a car without a radio etc and with worn seats then it is worth the cost saving. Most hire companies want euros 700 a month.

Hi Bryan. Thanks for that, it sounds worth checking out. Definitely a viable option (Mrs Andycamb might have something to say about it). Do you know the name of the company? When you say “wrecks”, how bad are we talking? I’m guessing they must be safe to drive. Hopefully AC as I’m there for summer.
