Hope to arrive in the region end of February and want to sell or trade in my 2006 Peugeot Boxer van for a Spanish registered used car.

Any tips on the best way to go about this?

Cheers

Steve

It's a real hassle, you need a local ITV/MOT here plus mods to vehicle like lights, plus there will be import duty. I would recommended you do not bring to Spain. Don't forget right now no deal to exchange drivers licence so far and if not done you would need to take a Spanish driving test withing six months.

Good afternoon Steve ,  There is a legal way you can keep your british van on the road in Spain , if you are interested , secondhand car prices are ridiculous.  Bear in mind that you have to go back for MOT. that's the only stipulation.

Put your registration document into a friend/relation name and  fill in the Spanish gov. permission form , allowing

you to drive......Done.........Cheers......Paul

Are you aware that once you have a 'Padron' or 'Resident' you cannot drive a UK plated car? I looked at all the options before sending UK car back to the UK. Worse still if missed the December 2021 deadline without a new Spanish Test you can't drive a Spanish plated car either, until hopefully they make some deal with the UK.

UK driving licences in Spain: extension to 28 February 2022

Good evening ,

I am a resident and have been in Spain for 19  years.  Please go on to UK Gov. site and the FAQ'S  are , one in particular is asking....... How long can a UK vehicle be kept in Spain ? and the answer is , in theory 12 months , only thing is it has to travel back for Mot.  So the vehicle is not the problem , it's the driver.  To get around this problem , as I have already stated transfer the ' Keeper ' as per the V5 certificate to a friend or relation.  Download the official trafico form giving the ' Keepers ' permission for you to drive.  4years ago I brought to Spain a high top Transit , and being category 1 it was impossible to change the metriculation on to Spanish plates.  I have done this , and just had a shunt up the backside , Police were called , and all the paperwork was ok.  Please let me know if you need to know more.  I can categorically state that it is all legal and above board.  As long as the vehicle has ,Mot , taxed and insured it is allowed to be in Spain for ever basically.   I spent 3 years making the van into a camper , but although the class had changed to a Ford Transit Campervan , I could not put it on Spanish plates . Let me know your email address and I can send you the Trafico permission form if it helps.......Paul.

OK I understand about an MOT and taxing in the UK, but how to you get round the Spanish law to use the vehicle which states..  'Once you have registered as a resident, you cannot drive a foreign plated vehicle anymore?

Hi ,  It's exactly the same as hiring a car in the Uk and driving it to Spain .  Although you own the car , you are not the registered keeper as the V5c states.  So, if you hire a car drive it to Spain , you have to have permission to drive that car from the  ' registered keeper ' , ' cos if you are stopped driving someone elses car and can't prove you have written permission the Police will think you have stolen it , and impound it.  My brother is the registered keeper of my van and I have permission from him to drive it.  Totally Legal.

Hello again , Your statement about not being able to drive a foreign car is incorrect.

"It is illegal for residents of Spain to drive a car with foreign plates"

https://www.angloinfo.com/how-to/spain/transport/vehicle-ownership/importing-a-vehicle

There is this - Once you have registered as resident on the Registro de Extranjeros, you cannot drive a foreign plated vehicle anymore, unless it is 'owned by a non-resident and the owner is with you in the car'. Or when you are within the 30 days window to import the vehicle, counting from the day of entry/first use in Spain or  if this info is not available, as of date acquisition/ownership.
