Hi I'm new on the forum.

I see that this was covered over a year ago but we are looking at Velez Malaga to buy a property. The draws of Velez is light on tourism, flat, all amenities close by and close to the coast.

Not knowing the town that well I would like some guidance on good and bad areas. I note Paul's advice last year so I think old town is not for us. Perhaps if you're still on Paul does Cruz Cordero, Cruz Verde or Los Oivos fit the bill below ?

We have lived permanently in Spain now for 5 years so we are pretty used to the Spanish culture and speak a bit of the language. We like having Spanish neighbours. So basically what we need:

Our budget is E120,000 maybe a little bit more for the one with wow factor.

We have 3 dogs so a house with a bit of outside space preferably ground floor rather than roof terrace. A house all on one level would be ideal but I guess if we had to compromise with 1 further floor upstairs that would be ok.

A relatively peaceful spot with good car access/ parking and close enough to shops and restaurants by bus for later on in life. Somewhere on the flat and near to open areas where we can let the dogs have a run.

We are going to spend sometime in Velez in the next couple of weeks so where is the best place to park and go and explore the town and suggested neighbourhoods.

Thanks in advance

Mandalou

Hi Mandalou.

We did spend a couple of mornings in Velez Malaga.

It really depends on what you want. It is a busy bustling city. For us it is a great place to spend time and there is everything you would need for day to day life. It is very Spanish which for us was good and all of our private medical facilities are available there which is important if you don't qualify for the state system. It is also quite hilly in places a factor to consider as you get older. But if you like an apartment in a bustling city you should like Velez Malaga.

Just a word on your plans. Is your visit in January to buy to live permanently now or in the future ?

Regards

Mark

I really do not know how Velez Malaga could in any definition be a "bustling city" as described by a previous correspondent.

It is a very traditional village, now town in size, but still very Spanish and fiercely retaining its traditions so anyone moving there must be ready to accept Spanish ways. If not, better look to live on the coast.

It has the best street market in the area, nationally televised Easter processions, is surrounded by agricultural activities, with the bonus of the small private airfield complete with flying school and recently added spectacular annual flying Festival. Unexpectedly, it also has the most brilliant dog park.

The locals are following the trend of other white washed villages and tending to move into blocks of new flats built around the town, selling their old traditional houses to incomers, quite a few of whom are British.

These older, typically Spanish town houses are largely built on the hill around the old castle, with views across their roofs both back to the mountains and down to Torre del Mar and the coast. The new flats are down on the plain.

It is within reach of all the amenities of the coastal developments but still retains the feel of a mountain village.

I hope this paints a picture. I love Velez Malaga, although I have never lived there because a) I prefer the space of the campo b) I could not cope with all the busy-ness of the narrow streets and the climbing to get anywhere at my age.
