Hi Paul,

whether somewhere is a good or not so good area depends largely on what you are looking for and what is important to you. La villa, the old town is very beautiful and you will most likely buy yourself a stunning view, but car access is difficult and if you are out on foot, you will always face this long uphill walk. Also consider that deliveries of building materials or furniture can be difficult to impossible.

Noise is another issue. If you like it quiet, think twice about moving into the old town. It is very much a gitano area. The spaniards are generally a loud people, but the gitanos can be VERY noisy. Think dogs barking (they almost all have dogs), kids playing in the street, tvs and radios blaring at full volume through open windows. I suggest you spend time walking past your chosen property at all different times of the day and evening,  especially on the weekend, in order to find out about the noise level of the neighbourhood before you commit yourself.

A nice area in my opinion is the north of town, around Cruz Cordero or Cruz Verde. Still spanish and picturesque, but not quite as gypsy-ish as la Villa. Or the small and quaint neighbourhood of Los Olivos, in the south of town. A little further away from Velez centre, but nearer to the shopping centre and the seafront.

Hi Paul, we bought a holiday home near the fortress last year. I agree about the noise,, everyone seems to have barking dogs and cockrels! We have found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming and never felt uncomfortable walking around. Even in the early hours after a night at Mclauds bar!!! 😂🍻
