My wife and I will shortly be needing treatment for cataracts and I will need more drops for glaucoma.

Although we have TIE cards, we’ve not registered with our local health centre.

Is registering a pre-requisite for using a private health clinic?

Good Morning Nick

Welcome to the Forum

First of all are you or your wife of Pensionable age  and receiving a State  Pension from the UK. If so you can request an S1 from the Pension Office in UK.Details of this is Online. Then when the S! Forms have been received in Spain , one must make an appointment with your Local Security Office(INSS) to register yourselves. Then  the next step is to Register with the Local Health Clinic in your area.

Under Pensionable age UK Citizens must rely on Private Medical Insurance. You may go to any Private Medical Facility you like. depending  if the Private Hospital is on your Insurance Panel of Health Providers. Otherwise you will have to pay to go privately and pay yourselves and then claim back from BUPA etc in UK, if possible

Hope this help

Regards

Nigel

Pensioners leaving the UK to live in the EU/EEA/EFTA (Spain) had to be apply for the S1 before moving and the end of the 'Brexit transition period, 2020', after which you need private health insurance, however, you cannot cover pre existing conditions. Spain has some good private clinics such as DR. TIRADO - COSTA DEL SOL OPHTHALMOLOGICAL INSTITUTE. (To access the Spanish state run service, people would now have to be paying social security.)

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for getting back.

We’re both receiving U.K. pensions. When we applied for our residencias in 2019, we needed our S1 forms to complete the registration, so that has already been dealt with. We then simply swapped our Green paper residencias for our current plastic TIEs.

We don’t have private insurance as our eye conditions are pre-existing, but just need to know if we can contact a private clinic and get our eye issues sorted without being registered with a doctor.

Hi Nick

I do not anything about this new query . You will have to ask the private clinic of your choice this question. See  also another OP forum user answer on this thread.

If you were on the Spanish National Health System, this type of operation would be performed at the Costa del Sol Government Hospital outside Marbella for free.

Good Luck

Nigel

Yes you can go direct to private eye clinic without seeing a GP first.

Hi David,

I have long wondered about this question.  My residency status in Spain started in 2018 - before Brexit and before my pension kicked in.  So are you saying now that when I do get my pension I can no longer claim an S1 for public healthcare due to Brexit?

So basically if the S1 was not completed due to age/receiving pension BEFORE Brexit then it no longer applies Ever?

Thanks.  Kerri

Hi Kerri

You would have to contact the Overseas Healthcare Pension Service in UK to ask the question( Details on the Internet). If you  were not living in Spain before the 31/12/2020, then you do have a problem. You would not be covered by the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement if you applied for Spanish Residence w.e.f  from 01/01/2021. .Maybe this link my help you.

You never mentioned when your state pension started, up until Brexit and the end of the transition period Dec 2020 all people were entitled to an S1 to cover healthcare if moving to an EEA/EFA/EU country. Beyond which Spain became a third country and no such rights exist, further all rights as an EU citizen were ripped, the TIE just gives the right to remain in Spain, making it clear Brits are aliens and not EU citizens. For what it's worth, unlike 'the EU Japan trade deal' where they included their citizens rights to swap their drivers licence, UK deal did not include so only applied while still an EU citizen. The British embassy is working on this, but was left out of UK trade deal. (The countries that have agreements with Spain are: Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, the Dominican Republic Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, 'Japan', Macedonia, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Paraguay, Peru, Serbia, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine, Uruguay and Venezuela) .
