I dont understand why anyone would get charged for having  a bank account I've not heard of that before.  Just another way of.squeezing .money out of people. They should be glad to have people banking with them

It is a bit of a setup with Sabadell.  They are good.  They have English speakers and their mobile app is really good.  However, they have this 35 euro quarterly charge if you do not have a steady flow of income monthly coming in.  Do not remember what that amount is but its fairly high.

For those of us who only keep the funds we need to live in Spain while in Spain and are not having pensions or salary paid into the account you are left with this 35 euro quarterly charge.

When I first moved to Spain my lawyer set me up with Sabadell saying it was the best Bank for foreigners.  Once you get all your payments set up it is harder to switch.

However, it seems that almost all the banks are less expensive than Sabadell.  I will do some more research when I get back to Spain and post here once I find out.

This is a very useful topic:

The Spanish banking system can be barking at local level - but progress is rapidly being made

The ATM user fee system is outrageous; still avoids transparency and ignores EU regs - but British punters often miss the point and overreact to service charges on current accounts

I’m a Spanish property owner but not a Spanish resident. I require English speaking services providers. Therefore I am willing to pay Sabadell a premium fee. I have no need for deposit accounts/crediting a regular income/investments etc. I pay to be able to pick up the phone and get issues resolved. In my experience their associates are from the top drawer

Current example:

The English speaking telephone/broadband agent Eurona was acquired by a Madrid based outfit called ‘Global Satellite Technologies’

Global Immediately hiked its prices and did away with Eurona’s key (contracted) selling point Viz. ability to suspend telephony payments for periods when absent from Spain.

Despite emailing Eurona / Global thrice and cancelling its by now unenforceable payment ‘contract’ they continued to make application for payment from my Sabadell current a/c. This despite the fact that I now receive fibre broadband from a new service provider!

Sabadell advised by phone that they have an online option enabling logged on customers to recall illicit direct debits. Each of Global’s illicit direct debits we’re successfully reversed with one online click (they still ignore correspondence)

...and you make a very good point.

When I first signed up with Sabadell I was given a Spanish contact who spoke very good English.  Even by email I would get a reply by the same day or the next day (latest).  All questions were quickly resolved.  So definitely a good service they offer non Spanish speakers.

I just wonder if some of the other banks have improved in the intervening years since I started with Sabadell?  And hopefully more people will jump on this discussion and add personal experiences.  I agree its a "very useful topic".

Kerri, yes, it seems things may have improved. Apparently Unicaja have english speaking customer service operatives (I can't back this us as when I've tried calling nobody answers) but I have messaged them via their Facebook page and they answer very quickly in perfect English. They have called me a couple of times when I've asked them to. Hope this helps. I'm also emailed the brach I opened my account at and the one in my local village and again, they emailed back.

Hi

Would you please find out how much you have to pay in monthly so as not to incur any  charges

Thanks

I have no idea. I suppose if you had a Pension/wages being paid into the account it would be free. I live in the UK and therefore pay the €15 per quarter for the account.
