Hi, I am looking at moving to this region of Spain to start a bed and breakfast.  We are in our mid 40s so haven't retired yet.   Is velez, Torrox or Alhurin el Grande a good place for all year round tourism?  If the answer is no are there any other good towns or villages for all year tourism in Malaga province?  Thanks

If you want to start a business in Spain, I would look at it very carefully, it's not like the UK.

Hi there,

my honest opinion is, that Velez and Torrox are not suitable. Alhaurin el Grande I do not know. There is a reason for the  noticable absence of guesthouses in Velez and it is, that there are just not enough tourists here. You get day trippers, but not many people stay. If they do, they rent a holiday home. Torrox has expats and day trippers, but there is not really much there for tourists. Again, people tend to stay in holiday homes. If you want to be successful, you need an edge, I think. Look at those guesthouses, that have survived over the years. Many of them are in the campo, maybe with good access to a village, all of them offer a pool. A view helps, but that is easily achieved in the hills. A very successful one I know, offers hobbit style round huts to stay in. Maybe become a yoga retreat, or offer luxury pampering weekends. Or non smoking courses for people who want to quit. Or get a location on a popular walking route. Offer language courses or a culinary experience. Become a vegan hotel. You need to be different and get an edge over others. Otherwise, open up your guesthouse on the coast and you will most likely get trade over the summer.

Good luck with whatever you end upp doing!

Marbella area perhaps.  Its been a few years now but when I came over to Spain looking at property the prices for stays in Marbella were either very high or very low and it seemed not much in the middle.  Now I didn't do extensive research and it was a little before the mad Air B n B situation but Marbella is a really central town for this part of the Coast and of course close to the Malaga Airport.  Even a little further down in Estepona is a nice area and growing up well and nice and central (like a mini Marbella).

Good luck!

Firstly visiting a place and living there may be totally different so perhaps better to come over when travel restrictions permit and research

Due to covid ,Brexit etc the tourism has been hard hit in Costa del sol so research is essential . In malaga city its very noticeable that tourists are absent especially from cruises

However you may be able to negotiate a good deal bearing in mind people maybe selling due to Trade ,Brexit ,etc

Best of luck to you
