Try searching triple A animal shelter Marbella - it’s on the way to Ojen just outside marbella which is also a fabulous place(  Ojen ) for your house search. It’s the foothills of Sierra Blanca - so property prices a little cheaper but easy access to coast when u need it .

El Refugio de Juanar is also worth a look at for your dog walks.

Happy days

Phil

Thank you Phil! Do you happen to know if dogs are allowed off-leash in natural areas/parks? We are used to going on a lot of walks/hikes with our dog and she is always off-leash in our local parks/nature reserves.

Also, my understanding is that bully breeds (pit bull mixes) are classified as PPP dogs and therefore require a special permit in addition to wearing a muzzle at all times. Have you seen many pit bull-type dogs around your area, by chance?

Thank you!

Daisy

not seen many at all-a couple in the dogs home.

All dogs  in national parks are supposed to be  on short leases.

I think this is the best I can suggest for you- you have probably researched it.

After 9 years living in Ibiza we finally sold up last November. We love (almost) everything about Ibiza, but as my wife & I are both retired, the daily cost of living was just too high so we've chosen Andalucia.

In February we took the ferry from Ibiza to Denia and we drove all along the coast, stopping at places that looked "interesting", to get a feel of a place that no amount of reviews or videos can truly reflect. Like you, Daisy, we're looking for a balance of traditional Spanish culture and a vibrant, English speaking ex-pat community. My Spanish is minimal and I need my regular fix of English football.

Geographically we loved both Mojacar and Nerja. Both beautiful to look at with stunning vistas, but, (in our humble opinions), a little overwhelmed with ex-pats. We even looked as far as Sotogrande, which is a large marina development only 28 kilometres from Gibraltar and its tax free shopping. Incidentally, in the 2008/9 recession in Spain, Sotogrande was the only area where property prices did not go down, so a detached villa in the hills may be worth a look.

For us, Estepona has the ideal balance. A traditional medium sized Spanish town with a delightful historical centre and right on the beach. It has a growing sophistication akin to Marbella but without the price tag, although prices are rising. Having said that, since the coronavirus, the property market has been stagnant. Now that we're coming out of lockdown estate agents have been flooded with enquires, but most analysts predict prices will fall in the next six months, especially once the summer rental market is over. So no need to rush.

Remember, one man's meat is another's bag of chips, so travel up and down the coast and choose the area that's right for you.

Lesdiablesrouge thanks for your comprehensive response. I appreciate the time you took to write this reply. It is very helpful indeed. As soon as the ban on US travel lifts we will be doing the same thing you did- driving up and down the coast. I think that’s the only way to do this.

Good luck to you and your wife!

Firstly, I would recommend within 30 minutes drive of the airport. We retired here 2 years ago and love everything about the area. People are so friendly and there are lots of English speakers in most villages. The best places are not too far from airports. I know Nerja and Torrox and they are both quite hilly and rather busy in peak seasons. Hotels, bars and restaurants get very busy and the prices also rise in the peak season and they are around 1 hour's drive from the airport. The advice I was given, was look at the coast, then move 20-30 minutes inland. Works for us. Your budget will buy a lot of villa here. Do shop around, or even buy a piece of land and build on it. We are in Trabuco, a beautiful village and a great bonus is that we can drink the water.
