Hi Jo
Very interesting!
The testing is not 100% reliable, for 2 reasons, which means that someone with Covid-19 will board most flights.
First, a test up to 72 hours is permitted. After that test, that person may have had contact with 101 people, in hotels, restaurants, bars and, of course, the airport and may have become infected following the testing. Testing should be done at the airport immediately before going through security.
Secondly, the antigen tests are, at best, 80% accurate and, at worst, less than 60% accurate! According to a report in the British Medical Journal, published on 4 February 2021, accuracy varies between 79.2%, when administered by trained laboratory scientists and just 57.5%, when administered by Boots track and trace centre staff! This was in a full Public Health England evaluation. The BMJ report said that, in the real world (Liverpool) as many as 60% of people who were infected, but without symptoms, went undetected.
By the way, the lateral flow antigen test kits cost about £3 each . . . . so £22 at the airport seems to be where the airlines are picking up the lost profits. I can book a flight from Malaga to London for €8.99, with Ryanair, but then there is another £142 on top for the Covid-19 tests.
The good news is that, if you have 'contact' (not defined but probably does not include mouth to mouth mmixing of saliva) with someone with Covid19 who does not have symptoms then only 6 out of 100 victims will catch the virus. So, transmissibility is surprisingly low and you will be very unlucky to have got infected.
