Thinking of moving to Spain, can anyone recommend  Nerja.

We are a retired UK couple, can you please tell us which is the best area we should be looking at?

We would want to rent a 1-2 bedroomed modern fully furnished apartment for long term, would this be possible?

I suggest you spend a long holiday in Southern Spain, consider everything to include health care centres, if you need public transport, take into account Brits can't swap their UK licence right now. Nejra a bit in the sticks, as they say UK. The only coastal railway, which is very good runs between Malaga and Fuengirola.    https://www.andalucia.com/cities/malaga/train/fuengirola.htm

While you are there. don't miss Malaga city it's fabulous

Hi Ferguson

As David says, it's worth spending time on research and visiting several options. I would highly recommend visiting La Cala De Mijas, in between Malaga and Marbella.

The two replies you have had illustrate why it's important to come and spend time here before deciding where to live.

Nerja is not in the sticks. I think Nerja is a bit too busy and crowded but, it's easy to get to and has much to offer. I wouldn't live west of Malaga if you paid me, it's just not my cup of tea at all. But for many people it's wonderful.  See? One man's meat is another man's poison.

It's really not possible for other people to say whether or not somewhere will suit you. If you know what you like doing, if you are clear about what you need, if you can speak Spanish, if you are confident about managing Spanish officialdom, then we might be able to direct you based on those criteria but, whether you'll feel at home is an entirely personal thing. What might look good on paper may not work in real life. You might stumble across somewhere that you'd never heard of and find it suits you perfectly (as I did). But that can only happen if you take your 90 days allowance and travel around the region. I'm sure you'll get lots of help and advice on here when you can be more specific. Best of luck in finding somewhere, I reckon none of us on this site regret coming to Spain - wherever it is we live!

Hi, thanks for your replies. We don't want an area that is too touristy but that still has the 'traditional' Spanish areas.

Mollina & Mijas in a residential caravan park sounds good to us but unfortunately they are too cold as they are too high above sea level. So we are looking for one not so high above sea level.

Do you think we will find such place.

Hi Ferguson

We felt the same when looking for the right area. We settled in rivière and love it. Not touristy but plenty to see and do. Of course as has been mentioned, it’s down to personal choice in the end. Like choosing a car. They all do the job but we drive different cars depending on our own personal preferences. I’m sure you’ll love wherever you settle. There are lots of beautiful places and each provides its own charm and personality. wishing you all the best.

"Nerja is not in the sticks. I think Nerja is a bit too busy and crowded"

Sorry just a London expression for those who live out of Town, Nerja has a population of about 20,000, about the same as Skegness.

"I wouldn't live west of Malaga if you paid me"

Really, I bet you might!
